Must have book for all Sony a5000 owners!

Prior to upgrading to the Sony a5000, I only had experience with point and shoot cameras. This book has been extremely helpful in discovering all the a5000 has to offer and taking better quality photos. Not only will the book go into detail about the features and how to use them on this camera, but it also goes into general photography techniques and applies them to this camera specifically.

Due to the number of different camera books the author has, I was a little worried this would be a general photography book with a few a5000 references thrown in and an a5000 slapped on the cover, but that is certainly not the case. The book is very thorough and the author clearly has mastered the a5000. I would highly recommend this book to any a5000 owner, especially those who are new to the Sony mirrorless cameras. It is a great value for the content and quality of the book.

This book was essential for me to understand all the bells and whistles of the Sony a5000. I had downloaded a PDF "manual" online, but this book had so much more detail, and explained things in a way I could understand. I loved it. I can't imagine learning my new camera's features without this book. I bought the book in both softcover and the kindle edition. I found the kindle copy to be the best option for me, since I could make bookmarks and/or notes of every explanation that I thought I'd need to revisit.

Despite its low price, the a5000 is a very capable camera; you could use it as a basic point-and-shoot, but to really get the best shots you need to know how to use some of its autofocus and exposure control capabilities. The Sony manual and "help" guide really aren't up to the task, but this book definitely is. It has clear explanations of the controls and includes many pictorial examples to show how changing settings will affect a photo. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't done much beyond point & shoot. It would be really difficult and time consuming to learn that by trial and error.

While different cultures have emphasized one of these drives or the other, a healthy culture will not completely forget either. Cultures differ in the way they emphasize one or the other, or flee from one or the other. These dimensions of human existence provide the framework for a person’s love of self, neighbor, and God. This volume is part of Transaction’s Library of Conservative Thought series.

a major philosophic work

Though relatively brief in exposition, The Metaphysics of Love is a major work in 20th Century philosophy and in the tradition of Phenomenological Existentialism, specifically, Existential Thomism. The author, Frederick D. Wilhelmsen, was a renowned metaphysician and charismatic teacher. Brisk and lyrical in the author's soon to be benchmark style, creatively informed not only by St. Thomas but also by the Spanish philosophers Ortega y Gasset and Xavier Zubiri, -- Wilhelmsen earned his doctorate in Spain -- the book is in many ways a Catholic answer to the genius of Paul Tillich whose works are thoroughly and appreciatively explicated here. As Protestant courage is very much a Courage to Be, in Tillich's memorable phrase, so Catholic courage, shows Wilhelmsen, is a Courage to Be-With, a Courage of Community best represented in the sensuous splendor of the Baroque. Several of the passages in this book are pure prose poetry. It is existential Thomism at its best.

To paraphrase Ira Gershwin, "on every [page] that you turn you meet a notable with a statement that is eminently quotable" in this collection. According to editor Shapiro, this is "the first quotation book to be compiled using state-of-the-art research methods to seek out quotations and to trace quotation sources." He compares his approach with that of the Oxford English Dictionary: he, too, traces words back to their earliest possible usages. Using a variety of electronic sources, such as JSTOR, LexisNexis, ProQuest Historical Newspapers, andTimes Digital Archive, scores of quotations were verified, and in many cases reverified. The more than 12,000 quotations collected here span a wide array of subjects, from literature, philosophy, and history to science, business, and politics.

Quotations are presented alphabetically by the name of the author or speaker. Shakespeare and the Bible, the mother lodes of quotations, are amply represented, but emphasis is on "modern and American materials." Children's authors, who are often ignored in other dictionaries, are quoted here. There are a number of special sections devoted to particular types of quotations, among them advertising slogans, ballads, film lines, political slogans, and radio and television catchphrases. Song lyrics are entered by the name of the composer, and film lines appear either under the film title in the special section devoted to movie lines or, if they originated in a book or play upon which the film was based, under the author of that literary source. Proverbs span the centuries and often include evidence of a saying's first print appearance. A keyword index, an essential element of any quotation dictionary, rounds out the text.

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (17th ed., Little, Brown, 2002) has around 25,000 quotations, and Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (6th ed., 2004) has more than 20,000. Although the Yale dictionary is smaller, readers may find it a richer source for familiar names, from Dr. Seuss to Donald Rumsfeld, and for special categories such as advertising slogans and film lines. Quotation dictionaries are an essential part of the reference collection, and this one, with its broad scope and meticulous attention to the origins of the material quoted, will enhance any collection, large or small. Entertaining as well as Enlightening

During the past 25-30 years, I have purchased and then made frequent use of dozens of anthologies of quotations (including revised and updated editions of Bartlett and Oxford) and consider The Yale Book of Quotations the most entertaining and enlightening of them all. As editor Fred R. Shapiro duly acknowledges, he had the substantial benefit of state-of-the-art research methods and resources that were not available to his earlier counterparts and thus was able to trace more thoroughly the origins of quotations he selected. Correct attribution is especially important to those who are, as Joseph Epstein characterizes them in the Foreword, "highly quotatious." Here several such corrections. "We are like dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants"(Bernard of Chartres, not Isaac Newton), "War is hell!" (Napoleon, not William Tecumseh Sherman), and "Murphy's Law" (George Orwell, not Edward A. Murphy, Jr.) Shapiro also includes a number quotations not found in previous anthologies. For example, "Whatever does not kill me makes me stronger"(Friedrich Nietzsche) and "Live Fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse" (William Motley). The 12,000 quotations are arranged in alphabetical order by author, with source and date of origin cited.

I especially appreciate Shapiro's provision of 200 memorable "Film Lines" (Pages 258-269) that include some of my personal favorites. For example:

Adam Cook (Oscar Levant) in An American in Paris (1951):"[My face is not] a pretty face, I grant you, but underneath its flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character."

General Buck Turgidson (George C. Scott) in Dr. Strangelove (1964): "Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million people killed, tops, depending on the breaks."

Captain (Strother Martin) in Cool Hand Luke (1967): "What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton) in Island of Lost Souls (1933): "[The natives] are restless tonight."

Howard Beale (Peter Finch) in Network (1976): "I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell `I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!'"

Harry Lime (Orson Welles) in The Third Man (1949): "In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed - they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy, and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

This is an anthology to be kept near at hand, perhaps on a coffee table, and will encourage and generously reward occasional browsing. Here are a few that recently caught my eye:

Using meticulous research to trace quotations to their original sources, Fred R. Shapiro was able to determine the validity of a claim such as Yogi Berra's, "I really didn't say everything I said." He probably didn't make all the statements attributed to him but he did make that claim, Shapiro confirms, during an interview by Sports Illustrated in 1986. Terrifically entertaining and useful

I have never owned a "quotations book," and I never had the desire to own one. But, getting ready to deliver a new speech, I now have the desire to pepper it with entertaining quotations, to illustrate my points.

To do so, one can go off of one's memory, but, as Joseph Epstein points out in his witty introduction, one will miss the mark: the quote and the attribution will most likely be wrong. So much for illustrating one's point!

Still, what I like most about this book is the sheer entertainment value. I keep it next to me on my desk, and, in a free moment, I would rather graze through it than surf the Internet.

The quotes are obviously weighted towards American authors and pop culture icons of the last 50 years. It includes famous lines in films, advertising and music culture. The chances that your quotation will hit the mark with your audience are greater with this book.

One note of caution: you shouldn't read this book looking for an author's most literate quote. The purpose of the book is to provide the most famous quote and nail down the attribution. Nevertheless, that shouldn't prevent you from deriving immense pleasure from just reading the book from page 1 to 851.

His annotations are mini history lessons and examples of examples of exhaustive research. Quotations junkies should take a gander at "The Oxford Dictionary of American Legal Quotations".

Everything I hoped this book would be! Love it!

Just what I'd hoped this book would be… easy….I love my Asian cookbooks but too often they involve deep frying or velveting. No deep frying in this one. The recipes are very doable and the layout of the book is one of the clearest I've seen. The pantry is great with clear pictures of the brands they are using. Do get the Spicy Chili crisp….it's great in so many things. I'm off to find that Sun brand ramen for the Ramen pesto….and the HonDashi. Okay, unconventional ---some of the recipes are but, this is Lucky Peach…. On the other hand I'm glad to see a classic recipe for Hainan Chicken Rice that doesn't overcook the chicken...great recipe. At the other end of the spectrum is Mall chicken without the deep frying…..Going to try that one instead of putting General tso's sauce on Popeye's nuggets. Definitely looking forward to the Miso Claypot chicken made entirely in the rice cooker although, there are directions for a dutch oven. I've cobbled some of their sauces from various websites over the years and they are wonderful. It's great to have them all in one chapter.
I like the treatment of the vegetables like an acorn, or kabocha that can be roasted and the miso glazed eggplant, also involved no frying but baking instead….easy. I'm looking forward to making the ragu-all three of them. I had already earmarked a very similar recipe of Sichuanese Chopped Celery and beef in Fuchsia Dunlop's Every Grain of Rice, so I was happy to find this adaption.
I broke my own rules as I have a self ban on buying any more cookbooks (I have more than B&N). but, I couldn't help myself with this and I'm very happy I couldn't resist. Its worth every penny….

In love with this easy, authentic recipe cookbook!

I'm in love. This book is the bomb! I collect recipe books--it's a disease. Especially when you consider that I can almost never follow a recipe. I don't know what it is about writing recipes, people think they need to be complex and multi-step before they're worth the money. So I use them "for inspiration" and then do whatever I want.

This one, I will probably follow all the recipes. They're easy, they're not fiddly, and they are bursting with flavor. I love the pictorial depictions of the ingredients. I did end up buying a few things that my very-well stocked pantry didn't have, but I could easily have chosen simpler recipes.

Tonight, I made Sichuan pork ragu and dry fried green beans. Amazing! I voluntold (when you tell your kid he has to volunteer to help you) my 16-year old son to gather the ingredients for the sauces for both while I got to cooking. It made it a breeze and dinner came together really fast.

I think this book is good if:

1. You're willing to invest in a few ingredients you might not have
2. You want Asian recipes rather than those from one country (eg Korean or Thai only)
3. You want meaty, chicken-y, rich umami flavored foods. There are a few veggie recipes but the starches and meats shine.
4. If you are on a low carb diet, you could ignore the rice and noodle sections and make the other things. The intense flavors that I see in the recipes will likely make the dishes great to eat on their own.

Update: The next day I made cumin lamb and the garlic shrimp with Sriracha. Very flavorful and the shrimp came together so quickly. My family is enjoying my enjoyment of this book :)

Definitely a great cookbook with easy, authentic tasting/sounding recipes

Finally, a cookbook that won't be collecting dust.

Those two lines had me from the start. This is truly an easy cookbook with recipes can be made on a weeknight (easy tasty stir-fries) to a fun weekend project (dumpling making). The book arrived this week and I've made the pork dumplings and the mayo-shrimp recipe. Both were streamlined and super delicious. I find this cookbook really exciting, as it delivers on flavor and simplicity. Already one of the most used cookbooks I've purchased in a long time.
