The e-book formatting is a disaster

The formatting of the e-book is a disaster. The text does not fit on the screen; sentences continue off-screen, which makes it impossible to read this otherwise interesting if basic introduction to social science methodology and theory.

Learning opportunities

Although the book isn't quite new (basicly from 1991) it gives en easy and relevant overview of (still) central debates concerning explanations in the social sciences.

The books also have relevant examples, although it's too often historical, from Asia, concerning peasant economies and within the area of antropology. You can take that though as another learning opportunity :-)

The book is furthermore fairly objectice when it comes to referring various positions. Little himself is part of a seldom, but quite interessting, branch of marxism, which blends Marx, methodological individualism (of a sort) and rachional choice theory. Another learning opportunity - and you don't have to agree :-)

A well organized survey

The great advantage of Varieties over many other introductions to the philosophy of the social sciences is that it is organized like a traditional textbook. It is not written for speed reading, but it assumes no prior technical knowledge on the part of the reader. New concepts are properly introduced as needed. Lecturers will be pleased to borrow from its many detailed examples of the various forms of social scientific explanation. Fashion-conscious readers should beware; Little is concerned with more traditional social scientific approaches. He might be classified as an "analytical" philosopher, and he doesn't devote much space to anything smacking of postmodernism & co.

About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics and Chair of the Department of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. He has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economics. Professor Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals such as the AMERICAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, JOURNAL OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, and QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS and in more widely accessible forums including THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and FORTUNE. In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers. it's "all that and a bag of chips"

This is a demanding high school (or undemanding college) introductory textbook on the subject. Only the most rudimentary algebra is required, and honestly one could easily get through the book without even that.

The edition is handsomely printed, with a font that's easy on the eye and plenty of colorful and helpfully-glossed graphs. The chapters themselves are not too long, which helps with a student's morale, believe me.

Recently I was put into a situation where I had to go, in the space of about 4 months, from knowing jack-squat about economics to being able to teach college-level macroeconomics!

Well, I frantically collected a ton of textbooks and articles about macroeconomics, ranging from the elementary to the abstruse and got to work.

And I gotta say: when something befuddled me and I found myself threshing about from text to text for the best explanation, it was nearly always Mankiw who came through with the critical phrasing that made the idea click and got me saying: "Ohhhhhh! I get it!" most often.

Not that this was always the case. There were times when I found better explanations elsewhere (e.g., Chapter 19, on the foreign currency market, is exasperatingly elliptical and could use a major dummying-down), but more often than not, Mr. Mankiw had the goods: the clearest and most easy-to-follow way of wording or graphing a slippery or counter-intuitive concept.

Of course, it's easy to hate Mr. Mankiw: he's young, he's handsome, he's brilliant (one of the youngest full professors ever at Harvard), and he's rich (his textbooks are now standard in AP courses nationwide). Jerk!

Because of these reasons, I would love to trash his book, showing how it "ain't all that."

Well, it is. Gulp.

Only one note: If you're planning on getting this book to study macroeconomics independently, you will find one irritating drawback: there are exercises at the end of each chapter, but no answers in the back. Essentially, therefore, it's a book for schoolchildren, not mature learners.

But its explanations -- believe me -- can't be beat.

Very comprehensive and well written!

I use this book in my economics class and all I can say is that is excellent. The author describes the basic concepts without being too complicated and messy. He keeps the things simple and incorporates some real-life economic problems and discussions into each chapter. The book overall provides a clear insight into microeconomics and shows what it is all about.

Amazingly Insightful

This book was a requirement for my intro level microeconomics course. I would like to being by saying that this book is an incredibly easy read. It isn't extremely boring and dry and it isn't extremely fun with little important information. It contains all of the relevant information. The way the book delivers the information is astounding. You read through a block of text and then the book displays graphical examples with captions below to help interpret the graph. The online homework that I had to do along with the book made retaining the important information extremely easy. Economics comes relatively easy to me, but the addition of this great textbook made getting an A almost too easy. I didn't even show up to lecture about one third of the time because Dr. Mankiw does such a well job of explaining the material.

I would highly recommend this textbook. It is probably the most efficient and useful text for learning introductory microeconomics.

It is a beautiful and inspirational book

Haven't tried the patterns yet, but it is a beautiful and inspirational book. Beautiful photographs, a capsule wardrobe I truly want to try, along with a strong dose of inspiration. One note, the book does not have step by step instructions so you should have the basis down before starting it.

Good patterns, but size range is Small - Medium

This book presents a base set of garments that an average sewer can use to create an office casual wardrobe. The patterns (included in an envelope attached inside the cover of the book) are plain enough that they can be used with any level of surface embellishment to create art-to-wear garments.

The only problem with the patterns is the size range:
American, Canadian, Australian: 4 - 14
UK: 8 - 18

I don't fit in that range, so I'll need to grade the patterns to use them. I don't know if they restricted the range so they would only need to show one pattern layout, or if they don't want their designs on fat people, but I don't like it.

YA-An autobiography that captures the pain, anger, and fierce determination of a black journalist writing today for the Washington Post. McCall's open and honest description of his life as a boy in a black neighborhood in Portsmouth, VA, his participation in violent criminal acts, and his eventual imprisonment for armed robbery seem somehow to be an expression of the rage of so many young people in America's urban areas. While imprisoned, he worked as inmate librarian and was so moved by Richard Wright's books that he became fascinated by the power of words and decided to become a writer. Though he's made a successful career against great odds, he makes it plain that he doesn't feel completely at ease with his peers in the establishment or those on the streets. His difficult story is told in such an immediate and compelling fashion that young people will be caught up in this strong narrative and gain real insight into McCall's growth and change and, thus, contemporary urban issues.

Insensitivity, alienation, racial hatred, drugs (especially crack), guns, rape, robbery, the black American as an endangered species--McCall covers it all in a depressing yet spellbinding documentary of a contemporary American problem so complex as to be almost intractable. The power of this strong narrative transcends McCall's personal struggle; each reader will "wanna holler" about the situation.

An Accessible Appetizer to the Big Questions

“The Big Questions" is an intellectually stimulating and accessible book on the big philosophical questions. This interesting collection of short essays is brought to you by New Scientist and addresses nine main questions. This enlightening 252-page book includes the following chapters/questions: 1. Reality, 2. Existence, 3. God, 4. Consciousness, 5. Life, 6. Time, 7. Self, 8. Sleep, and 9. Death.

Positives:
1. A fun and accessible book. It is well written and organized.
2. A fascinating topic, the big philosophical questions.
3. Excellent format. The book is broken out by nine big questions. Each chapter includes a series of topical essays.
4. The authors do a fairly good job of letting readers know what we do know and when do not know.
5. What constitutes reality from a scientific point of view? Interesting perspectives: our senses, matter, math, information and consciousness.
6. Existence. Some ideas resonate with me. “Something is the more natural state than nothing.”
7. Not afraid to share some far out ideas. “The holographic idea is only a hypothesis, supported by some special cases,” he says. Further evidence may come from a recently completed instrument at Fermilab called the Holometer, which will make the first direct measure of the graininess of space-time.”
8. Interesting facts. “The cells lining your gut, for example, are replaced about every five days. The outer layer of your skin turns over every two weeks and you get a new set of red blood cells every four months.”
9. God is the question not the answer. Perhaps the most fascinating question of them all.
10. Victor Stenger offers my favorite essay. “The universe is not fine-tuned for us. We are fine-tuned to the universe.”
11. The hard question of consciousness. “In humans the three brain areas implicated in consciousness – the thalamus, lateral prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex – share a distinctive feature: they have more connections to each other, and to elsewhere in the brain, than any other region.”
12. A look at artificial intelligence. “The interesting question is, why do we feel?”
13. How did simple cells get around the problem of evolving into more complex forms? Find out.
14. Time. “Several strands of evidence now converge on the multiverse, leading many cosmologists to take the idea seriously. In a multiverse, some universes would have arrows of time while many more would not. We should not be surprised to find ourselves in one that does, since that is the only kind of universe that could give rise to life.” Some interesting ideas on time.
15. The mind’s greatest trick, the self. The three fundamental beliefs concerning who we are. Interesting tricks like the rubber hand illusion.
16. The difficulty of understanding sleep and why that is so. “While sleep researchers have not yet managed to reach a consensus on why we sleep, they have a pretty good idea of how we do it.”
17. A look at death. “Most archaeologists now accept that modern humans, Neanderthals and possible other archaic hominins were engaged in mortuary practices well before 40,000 years ago.”
18. Defining when we are dead. The three conditions in which it makes sense to feel fear.

Negatives:
1. No supplementary material provided. No notes or bibliography.
2. The essays vary in quality. Some are excellent while others disappoint.
3. Meant to be for the masses and it shows. Some of the essays are simplified to a fault.
4. This book is more an appetizer than the main course. You get to sample the menu but not given the main course.
5. Not as challenging and though-provocative as I would have liked.

In summary, this was a fun and light read on the big questions. It’s an excellent appetizer for non-philosophy majors to get a bite out of some of these big questions. The book is well laid out and covers nine fascinating topics. The book is simplified to a fault and does not offer supplementary material to satisfy the hunger but it’s a fun summer read. I recommend it.

I would venture to say that I have read every book pertaining to weightlifting over the last three decades, and I have probably read the majority of the articles in this area. There are two things I can say unequivocally about what I have read. One, Marty Gallagher is the best writer in the world of physical fitness and strength, bar none, and two, Gallagher s newest book The Purposeful Primitive is the best manuscript ever produced in this field.

Teeming with esoteric information on training, biomechanics, nutrition, and sport psychology, The Purposeful Primitive is a wealth of information that every serious lifter needs to read. You are going to like this book. NO! You are going to LOVE it. I promise you that. It s Gallagher s best work, and that means it is strictly world class.

What can one say with certainty about the author of this book Marty Gallagher? Nothing other than the facts that he has been there and done that as an 800-plus pound squatter! That he has written over a thousand articles about fitness and nutrition in the published print media (not to include his amazing blog). Purposeful Primitive.

What an amazing book.It just shows you what is possible with regards to getting stronger.Such an inspiration.Even shows how ordinary very weak de-conditioned people got strong very quickly whilst only walking and using a barbell twice a week.

Fantastic resource for beginner or long time Iron devotee

A book on the crossroads of bodybuilding, power-lifting, and fat loss, by an accomplished lifter, coach and writer with over forty years of experience in the game.

Mixed feelings about this book. Short form: I highly recommend it to a range of audiences, despite my reservations. I enjoyed reading it, and will re-read it several times, looking for the bits I can make use of.

Marty coached or met everyone who was anyone in the world of Power lifting in the 80s and 90s, and he fills the book with anecdotes that give a real feel for the characters that made a half-underground sport what it was. He also uses these anecdotes to great effect when discussing training styles and nutritional strategies, building his recommendations for various phases of body recomposition around the greats he trained with or coached. His writing is engaging, and his genuine love of the sport shines through. The tales of strength he shares are inspiring, and he has a knack for presenting even the roughest of his subjects with their humanity intact.

The training and diet information are comprehensive. Marty is a big believer in old school training splits and volume, and he has plenty of experience to back up his position. It's an approach to training that will feel pretty revolutionary to a machine trainer or someone caught up in the absurd, unproductive isolation training so many unqualified trainers end up foisting on their clients.

On the downside, this is mostly a book for beginners and intermediate trainees. I didn't see his weight training recommendations as all that relevant to my own current needs; my program is already spartan by Marty's standards, and I expect a fair number of more experienced lifters will feel the same way. His cardio and diet recommendations were similarly solid, but not likely to change the way I train or eat (not because they're bad; just because it's another case of "I already do that"). Marty also doesn't make much of a training distinction between Body Building, Power Lifting, Strong Man Competition, Olympic Lifting, Martial Arts, or other strength sports. To a more advanced lifter who knows where he wants to fit in the strength game, that cuts into the book's utility.

The place where the book falls down most is in its silence on the subject of steroids. It's a tough subject to honestly discuss. Talking about it opens you up to attack from the For The Children crowd and scares the heck out of a certain percentage of law abiding citizens (i.e. the vast majority of the market). Athletes don't want their reputations tarnished by the public admission that they were using, and supplement manufacturers (a prime job for ex-champions) hate admitting that their spokes-user did not gain twenty inch biceps at three percent body-fat solely through the use of their products.

So, Marty doesn't talk about steroids and training at all. This isn't just a problem because we miss out on part of the story of power lifting and bodybuilding in the day. Ultimately, the training you believe in and recommend is built around what you've seen work. The training that works for a twenty year old serious steroid user is not necessarily relevant to any natural trainee, let alone the thirty-and-over crowd Marty seems to be speaking to. I can see how much experience he's bringing to the recommendations in this book, and I absolutely respect his impeccable strength-cred. But I'm left wondering: Are these volume recommendations really the best choices for a non-user?

In the end, I'd say that this book is still of great value and well worth purchasing, despite its flaws. If you're interested in a slice of Iron History, or a beginner looking for a guide to body transformation, go get it.
