About the Author
Educated at Columbia University, Dr. Harold Silverman has been a hospital pharmacist, industry consultant, author, and educator for more than 35 years. Dr. Silverman’s professional objective is to help people understand why medicines are prescribed and how to get the most from them.

In addition to The Pill Book, Dr. Silverman has also authored The Women’s Drug Store, The Pill Book Guide to Safe Drug Use, The Consumer’s Guide to Poison Protection,and Travel Healthy. He is also a co-author of The Vitamin Book: A No-Nonsense Consumer Guide and The Med-File Drug Interactions System.

Dr. Silverman has contributed more than 70 articles, research papers, and textbook chapters to the professional literature, including The Merck Manual of Medical Information, Home Edition. He has taught pharmacology and clinical pharmacy at several universities and has won numerous awards for his work. Dr. Silverman resides in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife, Judith Brown, and their son Joshua.

I do not like the new format

I do not like the way this book is organized. The difference between this format and past formats is that they group all of the drugs into categories and generalize the information accordingly. For instance, they classify all painkillers under "narcotic analgesics" and then they speak on general terms about narcotics. If you are looking for specific information for oxycodone, for example, you cannot get it. You just get generalized information that applies to all narcotic analgesics. Also, there are very few pictures. If I could, I would trade this book out for an earlier version. It does not serve the purposes that I needed it for.

A must have for any intelligent family.

With all the different drugs on the market today and taking into consideration the possibility of drug interactions and side effects, it is vital to stay informed. Recently my wife was prescribed two different medications by her doctor. Taking them together could have been a threat to her life, neither the druggist nor the prescribing doctor warned her about the side effects that would take place if she took both medications within 4 to 6 hours of each other. The Pill book did! GET THIS IN YOUR HOME! Think generics are exactly the same as brand name drugs? Think again!

Pill Book solid but not outstanding

As a master's level clinician working in the mental health field for almost 10 years, I did find the Pill Book to be helpful. It gives excellent information about brand names, generic names, original uses for medications as well as other important aspects such as other uses, common to rare side effects, etc.

The only part that I didn't care for was that I was unable to take the name of a medication and look it up following the pages in alphabetical order. So it wasn't as user-friendly as some of the other books like this I have used in the past. But I was able to utilize the table of contents for a certain medication and that seemed to work better.

Overall, a solid job but with a few tweaks it could have been outstanding.

American artist, author, and teacher Mary Walker Phillips (1923–2007) elevated knitting to an art form. Her creations are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Art Institute of Chicago, and New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Expanded Edition of Pioneering Textile Artist's Classic Work

This expanded edition of Mary Walker Phillips' CREATIVE KNITTING is a much, much better book than the original hardcover (published in 1971). The hardcover had only 4 full-color pages, while this paperback has at least 51! The text and knitting diagrams appear to be unchanged, but it's nice to see the knitted hangings in color, even though many were executed in neutral-colored yarns.

This book is not a book for every knitter. It's a book for textile artists. It explains how to knit decorative wall hangings with non-rectangular shapes and irregularly (and artistically) placed holes, elongated rows, bobbles, and beads. It's a book that describes stitch techniques that are far advanced beyond ordinary lace knitting.

The wall hangings shown in the book may not be terribly exciting to look at--after all, textile artists like Phillips were barely recognized in 1971--but the techniques Phillips used to create those hangings are timeless. Her techniques should be of particular interest to those knitters who always want to understand how a complicated knit stitch, decorative design element, or fabric was created.

The book also includes a brief history of knitting, illustrated with some surviving examples of 12th to 19th century knitting. It has an index, and a somewhat dated but still useful bibliography. Phillips, who passed away in 2007, was described in a New York Times obituary as "one of the two or three most influential knitters of the second half of the 20th century." Examples of her work, some of which are discussed in this book, are to be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Creativity

I own the original format of this book. Yes, it's true no flash, no eye candy and few if any colour photos. But here's the deal: when you get your hands on a book like this and you see it for the historical knitting value and not for the pretty pictures and hand holding directions....you are allowed to explore, design, and create something wonderful. Think of this book, as if you are going from picture books to novels. You learn with novels to create your own pictures. Creative Knitting is just that: a source to help inspire you to create something of your own.

not worth buying - spend your money elsewhere

I believe that fibre is (and can be) used as an art form - and I appreciate many different fibre art works and forms.
In fact, I rarely dislike fibre art or fibre art books; in fact I generally appreciate and often love them.
This book is the exception; not worth buying (or even reading) IMO.

I found nothing new - which is often OK - but not this time - not OK this time.
And it's mostly black and white - which is often OK - but not this time.
Why not this time?
Because it's bland and boring.

This book is bland and boring and provides nothing new - and offers no inspiration, IMO.

Spend your money elsewhere - add to your fibre stash or put it in the bank or buy another tool or book - but don't make the same mistake I did...
I expected some eye candy, and/or some inspiration, and/or perhaps something new or different... but, no, not here - not this book.

Review edited to add the following:

I am a fibre artist that has no problem saying that I get inspiration from many things (nature (beautiful coloured fall leaves or bare branches against snow, for example) - including things that are more "eye candy", such as a jar of colourful buttons).
But, I found no inspiration from this book, which was quite a let down as I had pre-ordered this book based on recommendations from the first printing - found this book very disappointing.

I do find inspiration from some of the following books, currently here on Amazon:
"A Treasury of Knitting Patterns"
"A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns"
"A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns"
...all by Barbara Walker, and all originally published in the late 1960's and early 19970's.
I've also found inspiration from her "Mosaic Knitting" book.
And another good book, which was published years ago (1930's or 1940's I think), is "Mary Thomas's Book of Knitting Patterns".
These are just a few "old" books that still hold their value in today's fibre arts community.

While many "old" books are still very relevant and extremely inspirational, not all "old" books can withstand time; this book did not withstand time IMO - it does not stand up to today's standards for information or inspiration.

I stand by my original review: spend your money elsewhere (or save it for another day).

Exactly What I Expected From Terry Goodkind

The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) by Terry Goodkind is exactly what the title claims, the story of the Magda Searus, the first Confessor. The events played out here are a crucial part of the back story of the Sword of Truth series. As the story opens, Magda Searus has just lost her husband, First Wizard Baraccus. Feeling lost and alone, Magda sets out to commit suicide in the same manner as her husband, by throwing herself off the wall of the Keep and falling to her death a thousand feet below. At the last possible moment, she finds a note left by Baraccus, urging her to find truth. In the chapters that follow, the reader is given a closer look at the events laid out as backstory during the Sword of Truth series. How the war between the Old World and the New was first started, the making of the Sword of Truth, the hiding of the Temple of the Winds, the creation of the D'Haran bond, the dreamwalkers, the traitors in the Keep, and the reasoning behind the creation of the Confessors. And other events even further back in history are hinted at.

This was an excellent read. I've read each book by Goodkind in one sitting, and this was no exception. This book explains many of the secrets behind the Sword of Truth series and gives the characters mentioned in the series their own stories. Even though this wasn't about the main characters, Richard and Kahlan, I was just as interested in the characters and eager to know more about them. The only two problems I had with this book were that now I feel the need to go back and read the whole series again and now I want to know more about the other events mentioned in the series. Here's hoping Mr. Goodkind feels the urge to write more of the backstory.

A note about the format: The First Confessor (The Legend of Magda Searus) is a self-published e-book. Many of his loyal fans seem to be quite upset that it's only available in e-format, as they don't have the necessary e-readers. Terry Goodkind wanted to tell the story in his own way, without the limitations imposed by a publisher. Apparently, he's one of the first big name authors to venture into the realms of self-publishing. His reasons for doing so can be found on his website at terrygoodkind.com. As reviewers, we tend to shy away from author self-pubs. Many that we've read have had lots of grammatical errors, formatting issues, continuity problems, or just plain poor editing. I didn't find a single thing wrong in this book. That's not to say there aren't problems, just that I didn't find them, and I usually do. If you're leery of reading this because it's a self-pub, don't be. It could easily have been printed by any of the major publishers and I wouldn't have noticed any difference while reading it.

He's Back!

I almost didn't buy this book. Although Terry Goodkind is one of my favorite authors I found his last couple books disappointing, so I started it with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. This book was impossible to put down. The story was fast moving, gripping and masterfully written. Mr. Goodkind will have you transported inside the Wizard's Keep while you are reading the story. I feel it is his best effort since Faith of the Fallen. It also gave we SOT series fans a better understanding of how the sword came to be and the creation of the Confessors. If this is an example of what he can do freed from the constraints of a publishing house then I hope the rest of his offerings come in the same format. I can't wait for his next book!

Read the original 11 Sword of Truth books first to avoid huge spoilers.

I was looking at a Wikipedia article about the Sword of Truth series and I noted that the books are listed there according to the series' internal chronology. That puts this book first on the list because it's a prequel. I suspect, therefore, that some of these reviews may be read by people who are new to the Sword of Truth series, who are thinking about starting to read these books, and who want to see what other readers think before taking the plunge. I therefore feel it's crucial to admonish those people: DO NOT BEGIN WITH THIS BOOK. Read the original 11 books (starting with Wizard's First Rule and continuing through to Confessor) BEFORE you even CONSIDER reading this one. This book contains information that would constitute MASSIVE SPOILERS for the original series if you read this one first. Actually, simply putting the word "massive" in all caps doesn't really do it justice. I'm trying to think of a way to describe how important it is to avoid the spoilers and one example that comes to mind is how if you watched the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy before the original three movies, the "I am your father" plot twist in "The Empire Strikes Back" wouldn't contain any suspense at all. Remember how people wondered for three years whether Darth Vader was telling the truth? If you'd seen the prequels first, you'd already know the answer. But I'd argue that reading "The First Confessor" before the original Sword of Truth series would expose you to spoilers on a far greater level than you'd find in the Star Wars context. That's how important the backstory contained in this book is. You'd ruin huge portions of the story. Don't ruin it for yourself. Read the original series first and then you can read the four companion volumes (this one, Debt of Bones, The Omen Machine, and The Law of Nines) in any order you like.

With that said, I should comment on the book itself. The paragraph above makes it obvious that I've read all the books. I rate this one higher than Law of Nines and Omen Machine, but I don't rate it as highly as the earliest books in the original series (say, the first four books through Temple of the Winds). I appreciated the backstory to the original series and the book kept me reading to find out how the result would come about. That is, because it's a prequel I knew how the story had to end, but I wanted to know how it would reach that end. Last night I kept reading until just before 1:00 AM, to the point where my wife kicked me out of the bedroom so she could sleep with the lights out. That's how much I wanted to keep going.

I would have given this book four stars because I greatly enjoyed reading it, but I've taken a one-star deduction off my rating for two reasons. First, I think this book exhibits a style that unfortunately came to plague some of Terry Goodkind's work as the Sword of Truth series stretched on, and that style consists of too many long speeches. How best to explain this? Some writers tell you the story of the characters actually solving their problems and battling their nemeses. You see when the figurative lightbulb clicks on for them and you understand why. Terry Goodkind's work isn't like that these days. Instead, he tells you that the character saw what had to be done, but he doesn't tell you what has to be done or why. Instead, it happens (sometimes explained, sometimes not) and then the character gives a long oration explaining what he did and how he figured it out. It's almost like ex post facto explanation. That can be quite dissatisfying. Second, I think he's taken to letting the characters find the solutions too quickly. In the original Sword of Truth story arc, Mr. Goodkind put his characters through the wringer at times. He tortured them. They went through massive emotional agony. He doesn't seem to do that anymore and the characters are almost too good at quickly realizing the solutions to their problems. No doubt part of that is the shorter length of his newer books. This Kindle e-book didn't contain page numbers, so I can't compare its length to the original 11 books (all of which I have in paper format), but I tore through it far more quickly than I did any of the original books. It's inevitable that with a shorter book you have to resolve matters more quickly. But the quick resolution makes me feel like the characters' natural human flaws are glossed over or ignored. We all have foibles and flaws. It's human nature. It makes a story less plausible when characters' flaws don't hinder them in a meaningful way.

In sum, I enjoyed reading this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who read and enjoyed the main Sword of Truth story arc. But the book has flaws and I don't think I'd be giving a fair review if I ignored them. The flaws didn't prevent me from enjoying the book, but I think they did hinder the book from being as good as it could have been.

John Scotney is an Anglo-Irish writer, producer, teacher, and broadcaster. He was the BBC’s Head of Drama in Ireland and later Head of BBCTV Drama Script Unit. A handy little book!

I almost didn't purchase this book. I already speak English, what's to learn? Glancing at a few pages inside changed my mind. It's not enough to just speak English, it's more complicated than that.
It pays to study the use of Irish English, as well as culture, before traveling there. People are the same the world over; courtesy and respect plus an effort to learn their ways are appreciated. They often use English in ways we do not. Otherwise you may live up to the stereotype of the intrusive and obnoxious American traveler!

Today, many architects are looking to fashion and techniques of tailoring as they attempt to achieve more and more complex forms using hard materials.

The book focuses on the period 1980 to the present and includes forty-six architects and fashion designers from the United States, Europe, and Japan. The featured designers include Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan, and Vivienne Westwood, among others. BUY FOR LESS AT MOCA

FYI...you can still purchase this book online (or in person) at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angelos brand new for 85.00. Unfortunately there's a 20$ shipping fee plus tax brought the total to 113.something. But that still beats 194 by 80$. I know its still not that cheap but it is better. Just a heads up for all the hungry art lovers out there.

P.S when you find a book on here you must have but don't like the inflated price, try finding out who the publisher is and check their site, sometimes the book is still available for the original price.

I apologize for not actually reviewing the book, I will when I get it, I just didn't want anyone to pay more than they had to.

Suleiman the Magnificent — The Scourge of Heaven by Anthony Bridge is an engaging, but not exhaustive, narrative of the major events in the life and times of the great Ottoman Sultan Suleiman (r. 1520-1566). I was not disappointed in this book, which reads like a charming storybook. The tome is at times suspenseful, always informative, and frequently suitably illustrated, including excellent illustrative maps. I wanted to learn not only about Suleiman’s life and his position in the constellation of Renaissance rulers of this age, but also the interplay with other rulers and subordinates — and in that regard I was satisfied. This book is as much a sketch of the life of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (r. 1519-1556) and a recollection of the treacherous exploits of Francis I, King of France (r. 1515-1547), as it is a biography of Suleiman. We must also mention the book contains vivid descriptions of the heroic defenses of the Knights of St. John in Rhodes in 1522, led by their Grand Master de L' Isle Adam, and in Malta in 1565 after becoming the Knights of Malta, led by Jean Parisot de la Valette; the raids of the Barbary Coast corsairs in the Mediterranean and the islands and coastal towns of Italy commanded by the renegade admirals of the Turkish fleet, Barbarrosa and Dragut.

In the narrative, Charles V stands out as a hard-working, conscientious, wise ruler without pretenses and more tolerant than his successor, Philip II, King of Spain, who was also hard-working and devoted but ascetic to the point of being puritanical. Charles is a courageous soldier and commander. Although always short of cash and hard-pressed for money, the Emperor is correctly depicted as the greatest ruler of his age, contended for the post only by the Sultan Suleiman, despite the surfeit of great Renaissance figures vying for the title. Francis I, King of France, who remains a great hero of the French up to the present day, is pretentious, always jealous of Charles, handsome, arrogant, easy going to his friends, but overbearing and treacherous to those he dislikes or perceives as enemies. A pain in the side to Charles V, Francis I is willing to collaborate with the Turks to oppose the Hapsburgs, Christendom, and the security of the West. We even get an incomplete sketch of Henry VIII, who is only tangentially involved in the struggle between the Cross of the West and the Star and Crescent of the Islamic Turks. Henry is more favorably depicted by Bridge in this book than the veritable tyrant he became in the historic record. The portrait of Don John of Austria is surprisingly desultory, as unfavorable as it is incomplete, but he features later in the Battle of Lepanto after the reign of Suleiman. A much better picture of Don John is painted in The Galleys of Lepanto by John Beeching (1982), which is, in fact, recommended as an even more colorful book on the characters and the era.

But in this book you will learn fascinating details about the siege and evacuation of Rhodes by the heroic Knights of St. John (aka the Knight Hospitallers), details of the celebrated Turkish assault on the island of Malta (1565), the invasions of the Balkans and Hungary by Suleiman, as well as his siege of Vienna, and you will not be disappointed. In fact, the book also covers a bit of the life and misadventures of his successor, Selim II, the Sot, which was necessary in concluding the narration of the story of Suleiman the Magnificent. And the author did so, concluding with the conquest of Cyprus and the Battle of Lepanto, which followed in its wake (1571).

Suleiman comes out of the pages of the book as usually a very wise but crafty ruler; another law-giver, a Justinian, but at times megalomaniacal for fame and honor. Usually just, but still a man of his age, Suleiman could be as ruthless and cruel as he felt the occasion demanded. And yet he was easily influenced by the two people closest to him — his loyal and devoted Grand Vizier, Ibrahim, who he eventually had strangled because of the suspiciousness and intrigues of the other most important person in Suleiman's life, his wife, Roxelana. Cruel and ruthless he could be: Suleiman also had his two most able sons strangled, Mustafa and Bayezid, as to have his youngest worthless son, Selim, the favorite son of Roxelana, succeed him as Sultan.

I recommend this book for those interested in the chronicles of Ottoman history and its clash with the West in the years when the Sultan Suleiman ruled, and up until 1571 when the Battle of Lepanto took place with its historic consequences. Suleiman the Magnificent — The Scourge of Heaven by Anthony Bridge is an easy read of history as well as a suspenseful adventure that complements an even greater book about this period, The Galleys of Lepanto by John Beeching, which I have already mentioned. I categorically recommend these books for those seeking a pleasurable journey into history and more knowledge of this critical period without being exhaustive or tedious in the effort.
