If you need a quick story with a message

As a public speaker I enjoyed reading these stories and thought as I read them how I might use them in my presentations. Some I had heard before, but most I had not. If you need some sort of lesson to be learned sort of story, this little book has 99 of them.

Should have been a free prelude to the upcoming Dark Horse comic

This book is very small--maybe four by six inches. That hurts the impact of the artwork because you are looking at such small pages. The artwork isn't bad, but it isn't really good either. Lara is a mere background character in this comic. The book is mainly about the other members of the Endurance crew and how they came to be on the expedition. I didn't care for what they did with Alex and Dr. Whitman's backstories. Not to mention there is an inconsistency between Dr. Whitman's backstory in the comic and a note written by Whitman in the game that Lara finds during her adventure. Basically, this is a nice little collectible for anyone who is a Tomb Raider fan, but the decision to release it in hardcover was not justified because it's too small and too short. It's not worth the fifteen dollar price tag Amazon is asking. It should have been released as a free prelude to the upcoming Dark Horse Tomb Raider comic, but they probably knew that people will pay the fifteen dollars because it is connected to the new Tomb Raider game. Honestly, the best thing about the book is the picture on the front cover. Just find a good high-res pic of that and save it on your computer.

I love Tomb Raider

I was first introduced to the Tomb Raider games when I was 12 (back with the first original Tomb Raider game). I remember opening up the game pamphlet and seeing Lara Croft action figurines, hats, shirts, even comic books. I wanted it all. I couldn't have it though. Being older now my best friend told me that she wanted this Comic Book in particular. I didn't even know this existed. I ordered it for her. It came wrapped in plastic wrap. I thought of ordering myself one, figured I'd order it later. So I sent it to her along with the rest of her Christmas gifts and she was so excited about it. At the same time I sent it to her, she sent me something as well. This comic book. I cracked it open and the artwork and story is phenomenal. I love everything about it actually. This is a great purchase.

Disappointing

What is the point of a comic book when its artwork is poor? They might as well have written a short novel. That would have been more enjoyable and would not have spoilt the experience of "The Beginning" for me.
There are some inconsistencies in the story as well and they have made Lara look manly in this comic book- with broad shoulders and her arms on her hips in every damn panel.
Do not waste money on this. Download it for free if you really want to read it.

Chapters 15 and 18 alone are worth the price of the book!

As a convert to Eastern Orthodoxy, I especially appreciated the clear exegetical and theological treatment of the "atonement" in Darrin Belousek's "Atonement, Justice, and Peace." Eastern Orthodoxy has never subscribed to the historically later and Western doctrine of penal substitution. To be honest, if I were not already a convert to Orthodoxy, I might never have thought to question what I thought was the only truly conservative, evangelical, and Biblical explanation of the atonement. For those who may think the same way, please read this book! Now, that said, I have remind those of like mind, that this book deals also with the author's perspective on justice and peace. Indeed, he deserves a fair hearing. Yet, from my single minded perspective, I needed patience since book did not immediately get to the subject I was interested in. This seemed especially so when the subject of nonviolence was introduced early on (and is also taken up in the last half of the book). However, those who do not subscribe to nonviolence theory at a level beyond personal ethics should not be deterred from reading this book! Part 2 ("Christ died for us: the cross, atonement, and substitution") is everything I hoped it would be. At that point, Belousek begins to deal, in thorough way, with the historical, exegetical and theological problems of penal substitution. He is not merely critical though. In chapter 18, Belousek makes an eloquent proposal for the idea of Christ as our corporate representative. Here he explains this "redemptive solidarity" and the divine-human interchange that takes place through Christ. Orthodox Christians will appreciate Belousek's awareness of early church history and his use of the Eastern church fathers, especially Irenaeus and Athanasius. In fact, he ends Part 2 with an explanation of Athanasius' theology as it relates to the topic at hand. As I read this book, I especially marked up the margins of chapters 15 and 18. I think these chapters alone are worth the price of the book. Whatever one concludes about the Belousek's proposals regarding the mission of the church, justice and peace, I highly recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest interest in the doctrine of the atonement. Belousek's work on this topic really should be required reading on the subject.

A thorough survey of Atonement theology in the Bible

This is the most thorough, yet most readable book on Atonement theology in the Bible that I have ever read. The length of the book (ca. 640 pages) may seem daunting but I found it an absorbing and exciting and stimulating. I think anyone with a serious interest in how the Atonement should be understood in scriptural terms will find it equally so. Even when the analysis of certain texts is detailed and technical, it is expressed about as clearly for the average reader as it can be. Like many people, Belousek find the "blood atonement" theology attributed to scripture as highly problematic and surprisingly unscriptural under careful examination. The notion that God (the father?) HAD to punish somebody for humanity's sins and punishing Jesus would do the job makes God seem less than loving. Belousek is see an unequivocally loving God revealed in scripture and demonstrates how the thrust of the Atonement is God making a costly (to God) reconciliation with hostile humanity. Some readers who are attracted to this point of view might be uncomfortable with Belousek's upholding "wrath" and "retribution" as types of reaction to human sin, but the analysis of "wrath" as it appears in scripture is given the most thorough survey I have ever read, which makes it valuable even to one who does not agree with it. As it turns out, "wrath" is so re-defined when it comes to God that it becomes pretty far distant from wrath as experienced among humans and it takes on ironic overtones. In the final sections of the book, Belousek discusses how Atonement as God's costly reconciliation with us affects ethical and social issues, among them capital punishment.

A second reformation

A masterful analysis of the doctrine of 'penal substitution atonement' which complements 'A Gentler God' by Doug Frank, and provides the heavy duty exegetical study that 'A Gentler God' missed doing. It has the potential to bring about a second reformation in evangelical circles. I have read only 25% and already I find it very convincing and thorough. The author is no 'liberal' - it is his very high view of the Bible and scholarship which underpins this book.

What amazes me is that for so many years I missed so many clear scriptures which demonstrate penal substitution is actually heresy, because of my 'penal substitution' mindset which blinded me to them.

With praises from Wonder Woman, Catwoman and almost Theodore Roosevelt, how can this book be bad?

This 208-page hardcover is filled with beautiful illustrations, each reprinted full page on low gloss paper. Nice. Additionally, there are also pencil sketches and layout that look and feel as good. And every cover comes with insightful commentary from Adam Hughes, so you can find out which is his favourite cover or who's his disliked superhero. Besides the paintings, there are also pictures of figurines and other merchandise created for these characters. Cool.

The main characters for this art book are Wonder Woman and Catwoman, occasionally other superheroes from DC (and only DC) as well. The paintings are gorgeous and glorious. The colours, stylized rendering, glow, and the looks on the faces are all so alluring.

My favourite, among other favourites, is the mugshot of Catwoman, with tears mixed with eye shadow streaming down her cheeks. I like the fact that each cover reveals a bit of the personality and story subtly.

Cover Run is a wonderful collection of quality covers.

Highly recommended to fans, collectors and artists.

Curse you, Adam Hughes!

Adam Hughes is a better artist than you. Adam Hughes is a better artist than me. Adam Hughes is depressingly, embarrassingly good, and he's making everyone else look bad.

Adam Hughes must be stopped.

So don't any of you buy this book! If you buy this book, Adam Hughes might know how good he is. He might keep drawing, and he might even, (through some dastardly witchcraft,) become EVEN BETTER. And then I might have to kill myself. So don't any of you buy this book!

Since none of you will be buying this book, because I told you not to... I'll let you know what you're missing.

The first 25 pages showcase some of Hughes' earlier work, from the late `80s to early `90s. The largest section of the book, at about 75 pages, is dedicated to his Wonder Woman covers. Then there're about 50 pages of Catwoman covers, followed by 50-ish pages of miscellany (some Superman/fam, Rose & Thorn, Gen13, JLA, Teen Titans, Power Girl, and Batwoman). This is interspersed with a few double-page spotlights on his merchandise-design work (busts, statues, and posters/t-shirts). All sections include sketches, preliminary thumbnails, and commentary, so you get an idea of how the artist works.

This is not a complete sampling of Hughes' work: as the title indicates, only the stuff he's done for DC is represented here. So unfortunately, that means no Tomb Raider, no Red Sonja, no Star Wars, no Marvel characters. The book can't really be faulted for this: it delivers exactly what's promised on the cover. But here's hoping Hughes' will get the chance to publish more collections.

I mean..! Curse you, Adam Hughes!

THEY LIVE!!!!

Today isn't that hard to make beautiful illustrations. With the help of the correct software almost any artist can deliver realistic portraits and landscapes.

So although all works delivered by Adam Hughes are astonishingly beautiful in form, that's not what's impressive in them.

AH imagines scenes that turn fantasy characters in real figures, real persons. The relaxation seen in Power Girl's face when she's flying on her back, it's the same as anyone leisurely swimming. The pain and shame of Selina Kyle being mugshoted in the police precinct is the same as any master criminal would feel being caught. The mix of boredom and despair on Superman face while Lois Lane interviews Wonder Woman is fabulous! The terrifying madness of thorn is palpable. The "I am a goner" look of the pilot seeing WW flying toward him!

Each of AH works is a masterpiece with hidden meanings, secret stories and infinite drama, joy, pleasure or pain...and frequently with loads of humor.

Adam Hughes may be slow to deliver, but he knows his weakness. We, his public, know his strengths.

Keep up with the good job Dr. Frankenstein (yes, this is for you AH)...like him, you also created life from characters that don't exist.

U.S. Infowars and NATO Expansion

Monopoly was originally published in 2000 in French as Monopoly: The NATO Conquest of the World by Belgian journalist Michel Collon, who has written for Solidaire. In 2007, an English language version was published by Unwritten History, Inc., under the title Media Lies and the Conquest of Kosovo: NATO's Prototype for the Next Wars of Globalization. Collon analyzed NATO's expansion into the Balkans, Southeastern Europe, into eastern Europe, and the border of the Russian Federation. Kosovo was a prototype for how NATO would conduct future wars of expansion. Moreover, the media role in future wars of globalization will mirror those used in the Kosovo conflict. The U.S. and Western media relied on disinformation, propaganda, misinformation, infowar techniques, brainwashing, and even U.S. Army Psyops specialists who worked for CNN and NPR. The Kosovo conflict demonstrated the power and depth of the U.S. propaganda machine that was able to manufacture a second Holocaust and a genocide in Kosovo, replete with extermination and death camps that never existed. The genocide propaganda paradigm was shown to be a hoax concocted by the U.S. government and by the governments of the NATO countries that bombed and occupied Yugoslavia. Collon is able to show the crucial importance of developing critical media literacy skills. An ignorant and misinformed public is manipulated and cajoled into supporting wars of expansion and aggression.

"Each war begins with media lies." This is how Belgian journalist Michel Collon begins his analysis of the Kosovo conflict which resulted in the U.S. and NATO bombardment of Yugoslavia in 1999 and the subsequent occupation of the Serbian Kosovo province by U.S. and NATO troops. The U.S. and NATO had launched a war of aggression without United Nations approval and in violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Yugoslavia. The war was illegal and criminal under international law and under the Charter of the UN.

How was an illegal and criminal war "sold" as a "humanitarian intervention" to prevent "genocide" and a second Holocaust? This is the question that Collon analyzes and attempts to answer in the book.

Collon stated that the "primary objective" of the book is to allow "the reader to recognize media lies". The Kosovo conflict is used to demonstrate how the U.S. media and government used "disinformation" and "war propaganda" to cover up the fact that no "genocide" or atrocities had taken place in Kosovo. He is able to deconstruct the deceptions and lies perpetrated by the U.S. and Western media. The analysis is essential reading in promoting critical media literacy skills and in the deconstruction of the modus operandi of the U.S. and Western media.

But if there was a massive and unprecedented U.S. infowar and propaganda and disinformation campaign, what was the reason for it? Collon analyzed the hidden agendas and objectives that the U.S. and the NATO countries had in launching such a blatantly illegal and criminal war of aggression. He showed how NATO expansion eastwards and into "Southeastern Europe" were important strategic and military objectives. The neutralization of Serbia was vital for the U.S. and the EU because Serbia was not a compliant U.S. proxy, client, and satellite state. Serbia was a large roadblock in the way of U.S. and NATO expansion. Serbia had to be wiped out. And that is what the U.S. and NATO did. The Kosovo conflict was the result.

Economic interests were also of primary concern for the U.S. and NATO. Serbia was resisting "privatization" and the "open society", that is, the corporate takeover of its economy by U.S. and Western corporate raiders, NGOs, and corporate conglomerates.

Collon examined the ramifications of the Kosovo conflict for future conflicts, the "next wars of globalization." In particular, he saw the connection of Kosovo to the Caucasus, the interconnection of Kosovo to the South Ossetia and Abkhazia conflicts. Collon saw the Kosovo conflict as only the first war in NATO's expansion eastwards and NATO's plan to encircle the Russian Federation.

The war launched on August 7, 2008 by U.S. client state Georgia to take over the de facto independent regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia can be seen as the second war concocted by the U.S. and NATO. The goal is the same in Kosovo and in South Ossetia. The U.S. and NATO seek expansion. Collon was able to foresee the South Ossetia conflict, His analytical framework is accurate and critical, providing an objective and unbiased analysis of NATO and U.S. motives and policies.

Collon begins his analysis by deconstructing the media deceptions and lies that the U.S. and Western media used to "sell" the illegal war in Kosovo. The U.S. propaganda model was to use the Bosnia Holocaust propaganda analogy. Accuse the Serbs of committing genocide, of recreating the Holocaust. Make up outrageous and preposterous atrocity stories and fabrications and concoct unbelievable casualty numbers. Revive the "ethnic cleansing" meme that worked so well in Bosnia. And then develop the genocide propaganda argument.

There was a claim by the U.S. and Western media that there were "100,000 Missing" Albanian Muslims, presumed to have been killed by the Serbs. U.S. President Bill Clinton stated at a White House press conference on June 25, 1999 that "tens of thousands of people", that is, Albanian Muslims, had been murdered in Kosovo on the personal orders of Slobodan Milosevic. This was nonsense and a malicious deception. Geoff Hoon of the British Foreign Office similarly claimed that "it appeared that around 10,000 people had been killed in more than 100 massacres." These were outlandish, cynical, and immoral lies disseminated by government leaders. But Bill Clinton and Tony Blair understood that there were no repercussions and consequences for the most outrageous of lies and deceptions. By playing the genocide game or genocide card, moreover, invoking genocide in what was an internal, separatist and secessionist conflict, Clinton and Blain knew that they could silence any dissent and debate. Who wouldn't want to prevent genocide and atrocities? Framed in those deceptive terms, it was a win-win situation that was based totally on disinformation, infowar and psyop techniques, and fabrications.

In fact, claims of genocide by the U.S., Britain, and other NATO countries were later shown to be lies and fabrications concocted and planned by the governments of those same NATO countries that bombed and occupied Yugoslavian territory. U.S. infowar techniques went into high gear. The U.S. media and government propaganda machine went into overdrive. U.S. Army Psyops specialists even were hired by CNN to work for the news network. This was the appetizer. This was to get everyone ready for the main show, which was the bombing and occupation of Serbia.

Collon examined and discussed the language and terms of the Rambouillet Accord which no sovereign and independent country could accept. It harkened back to the 1914 Austro-Hungarian Ultimatum to Serbia that led to World War I. Under the terms of the Rambouillet Accord, Serbia had to allow NATO the right to potentially occupy all of Serbia and Yugoslavia, had to give Kosovo de facto independence immediately, and allow Kosovo Albanians to vote on independence after three years. What sovereign state would accept these terms? Would Georgia under Mikhail Saakashvili accept these terms for the resolution of the South Ossetia and Abkhazia conflicts? Clearly, the U.S. planned a war to allow the Kosovo Albanian Muslim separatists to secede from Serbia, like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini had done in 1941, and for essentially the same reasons, to use Albanians as a proxy against Yugoslavia, a hostile and non-proxy state.

Collon cited convincing and compelling evidence that the U.S. and NATO planned an "intervention" in Kosovo long before the 78 day bombing started in 1999. In June, 1997, a French government official visited a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Adriatic. A U.S. admiral showed him a map of Yugoslavia with blinking lights on it. When asked what the lights represented, the admiral replied, "These are the future targets of our air attacks." This was almost two years before the alleged "crackdown" and "atrocities" in Kosovo by the Slobodan Milosevic regime. This was before anything had happened in Kosovo. The U.S. and NATO were planning the next war. And Kosovo was the place. Some rationale was needed, any rationale, and the U.S. propaganda and infowar machine came up with one.

Finally, Collon analyzed the war crimes the U.S. and NATO committed in Kosovo by targeting Serbian hospitals, nursing homes, passenger trains, automobile factories, power grids, marketplaces, refugee columns, and television stations. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch confirmed that based on the evidence they gathered, the U.S. and NATO were guilty of committing horrendous war crimes. But who was going to prosecute them? Who was going to arrest Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright and bring them before a war crimes tribunal and court? Who was going to prosecute the U.S. and NATO war crimes in Serbia and Yugoslavia? Might makes right.

What did the U.S. and NATO achieve with the alleged "humanitarian intervention"? Following the war, an estimated 250,000 Kosovo Serbs, Roma, Turks, Gorani, and Jews were forced to flee Kosovo, creating an ethnically pure Albanian or Shqip "Kosova", a Greater Albania. What the U.S. had achieved was to allow its proxy Albanian forces to secede and to create a second Albanian state in Europe. The U.S. had achieved the goals of Albanian separatism, creating two Albanian Muslim states in Europe.

Collon analyzed the Racak "massacre" and showed how this incident was staged and manipulated and distorted by the U.S. government and media. Those killed were armed Albanian Muslims who had been engaged in a shootout with Yugoslav police and security forces. The evidence showed that they had gun residue on their hands indicating that they had fired weapons. Racak was the pretext the U.S. needed to launch the illegal bombardment of Yugoslavia. Anything, any pretext, would have done.

Collon showed how economic factors were also paramount in the Kosovo conflict. U.S. President Bill Clinton had explained that "that's what this Kosovo thing is all about ... our ability to sell around the world." He cited a Thomas Friedman statement in the New York Times : "The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist--McDonald's cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the builder of the F-15." Bombs precede burgers. A McDonnell's F-15 laser guided bomb sets the stage for a McDonald's Big Mac burger. Finally, the New York Times on July 18, 1996, attacked Slobodan Milosevic, "a former Communist", because he retained "state controls" over the Yugoslav economy and because of "his refusal to allow privatization." The Washington Post explained succinctly why Yugoslavia was targeted by the U.S., NATO, and the EU: "Milosevic failed to understand the political message of the fall of the Berlin Wall while other Communist politicians accepted the Western model, and moved in the direction of the rest of Europe, Milosevic went the other way." Milosevic did not grasp that the U.S. was the sole Superpower, the "global hegemon" who required all states to adopt and to follow the "Western model". Ultimately, this was what the Kosovo thing was all about.

Collon was able to analyze and deconstruct exhaustively and thoroughly the many issues involved in the Kosovo crisis and to see their future implications in the Caucasus. Collon analyzed how the Kosovo conflict was aimed ultimately at Russia and China and was a precursor to NATO expansion into the Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, Georgia, and the Caucasus. Georgia is vital because of its strategic location and because of its nexus to oil pipelines.

Kosovo was not the end, but only the start. Kosovo was the beginning. South Ossetia and Abkhazia were the next wars. Kosovo set the stage for Iraq, Afghanistan, and the conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and was the intended "prototype" for future wars of "globalization" and for spreading "democracy" and "freedom" around the globe.

Basic Tantra

I have been a student of Bohdi's for some time now and cannot recommend her highly enough. Direct and to the point she dives right into the heart of what it means to be a tantric practitioner. There is no substitute for experience and Bohdi is a living example of this teaching that if it doesnt serve your growth, move on. A sanyassin of Osho, student to many teachers (and visa-versa), Bodhi has synthesized a system for rapid spiritual growth via the tantric path. And most importantly, she teaches straight forward and from the heart space. This book is a classic and a must have for any Tantric library. Namaste to Bohdi and all on this path.........
PS She has recently published a second volume of material. Also highly recommended.

I own this book and have been studying this style of yoga "Ipsalu Tantra Kriya Yoga," for five years. I have also had the good fortune of meeting and working with Bodhi. I have attended many of the workshops that are offered and listed on their web site. This book is of great value to me, and to my Tantric yoga practice. This is a great reference guide to developing a good and sound practice. This is the real deal. If ever you wanted to really bring heart, sprit and sex into one great union then this is the book and practice for you!

Bought for one of my students

I know this is supposed to be a beginning Bach cello book, but I thought the majority of the pieces were boring. I sight read them all to decide which one to have my student work on for a solo (that was the reason I purchased it). The Gigue is a fun little piece and that is the one I will be using, but the rest of them are pretty blah.

Good start for a closing year concert

First of all, the basics: the quality of the print material is good, with separate sheets for the cellist and the piano player.
Arrangements are all playable within the 1st position and I could play some of them with less than one year of cello lessons.

However, most of the pieces are far from the level of beauty Bach has accustomed us, hence the 4 stars... excepted the Air in page 11, which is really plenty of emotion. I wish ALL the pieces be in the same level of inspiration.

I recommend it for students wishing to prepare something for the 1st and 2nd year end of year concert.
A good pianist, plenty of patience and good taste, will help for a successful play.

Indispensible in the metabolic clinic

A rapid "at a glance" reference manual devoted to inherited metabolic diseases, I consult this book several times a week as part of my clinical work. The book is arranged by metabolic pathway and with descriptions of metabolic diseases and their respective laboratory findings. The pathways themselves are defined but not in so much detail to overwhelm the general pediatric or neurology resident rotating through metabolic disease.

This book is small and easily fits in your pockets - for this reason I'm not sure why the book has a $73 price tag attached to it.
