This book has been very carefully produced. The recipes are written with much detail, clear hints, and color coded information. The photographs are wonderful. One gets a very good idea of how the prepared dish will look. This book is aimed at chefs and those learning to cook in culinary schools. However, anyone with an interest in delicious flavors and easy to follow recipes will enjoy having this book ready to browse in the kitchen. The historical paragraphs and maps give just enough information about the origins of many of the cooking styles.

Reader Review: Winning Go

How do we improve in Go? Many strong players tell us that improving our reading ability by regularly solving Go problems is the most essential form of study to supplement regular game play.

"Winning Go" by Richard Bozulich and Peter Shotwell, is a problem book that is unique in its systematic coverage of each major phase in the game. Each chapter introduces a new main topic by first briefly reviewing major concepts and then providing a set of problems so the reader can see those concepts in action. When warranted, the solutions go into great depth to ensure a proper understanding of each of the concepts at play in a particular problem is grasped. Finally, many chapters end with a list of suggestions for further reading. The book covers as much ground as is typically seen in a series of five or more volumes.

I am playing at 7 kyu, and for those unfamiliar with the ranking system, I would describe this as an experienced novice. I find that the problems are near the right difficulty for me. The easier problems tend to take 30 seconds to two minutes to solve, while some more challenging problems I am not able to solve on my first attempt. Something I've found interesting about the book is that it clearly points out those areas I need more practice at (for me, endgame).

I recommend this book - but I particularly recommend it to those looking for a gift for the Go player on their shopping list - or to the Go player looking to stretch their dollar as far as it will go.

Winning Go from a SDK perspective

So, you are an aspiring go player rising through the ranks. You've got a good grasp on the basics but find yourself starting to stall in the single-digit kyu range. If this describes you, Winning Go is a good solid all-in-one volume to kick-start your upward climb and get you thinking about the finer aspects of the game. Through hundreds of problems the authors present the reader with challenges and practical applications of technique that range across the facets of an entire game.
The book has 7 chapters focusing on the opening, mid-game, tesuji, joseki, shape, life and death, and the endgame. Most of them open with a few guiding principles and then leap right into 30-odd problems demonstrating them in action. Many of the solutions also offer explanations of why incorrect moves don't work (a welcome addition). At my level (6k AGA), I found most of them difficult, but saw them as challenging instead of frustrating and my relative success from chapter to chapter helped point out where my current weak points are. I also found the "complete the joseki" section to be very interesting since I hadn't tried many problems like that before.
Overall, I'd say this would be a very useful book for a SDK player trying to either get ideas on how to move up to the next level of play or trying to refine their skills as well as players a little higher than this working on rounding out their game. The across-the-board nature of the book does limit the depth any given section can get into, but this breadth makes it very useful for a single purchase. Recommendations are given for other books that focus more on individual topics. Occasional editing errors and changes in the problem goals (like suddenly changing from "black to play" to "white to play" without notice) do distract some but don't stand in the way of informative lessons.
Winning Go should be a welcome addition to your go library if you are looking for a wide-ranging text that moves past the basics well into the intermediate level without inundating you with minutae on an individual topic or breaking your budget by buying 6 different books.

This book provides cursory explanations and plentiful problems across all stages of the game.

The back cover describes it as "the ideal choice for a first problem book". As a player in the 5-6 kyu range, I found the problems challenging; I was able to answer some immediately, but for others I found even the solutions difficult to follow. This book doesn't seem to know at what level it is aimed; it begins by talking about making good shape (a fairly advanced concept), THEN explains atari (a concept so basic some consider it part of the rules).

Worse, there are numerous errors in the diagrams. Every Go book has a few of these -- wrong color to play indicated, marks missing, answer associated with the wrong problem -- but this book has more than its fair share. By the later chapters, the errors are so frequent that the frustrated reader is left wondering, "Why should I think about this problem when the answer is likely to be to a different question?"

For beginners, I would recommend Janice Kim's "Learn to Play Go" series. For more advanced players, the Elementary Go Series (especially Life and Death) and the Get Strong At Go series, the latter by one of the authors here (Bozulich).

I would recommend this book to everyone. Wherever you find yourself in life, I know that you will take away something that you can act on instantly. I find myself constantly recollecting bits and pieces of each section and realizing that I am implementing them throughout my day.

Demystification of finance

Great book that explains banking and finance in understandable terms.

If you want an idea of what this book is about, you can search for the author's recent New Yorker article "The Danger of Financial Jargon"

The book has clear explanations and examples of how jargon can be used to confuse and intimidate people -- both individuals engaging in financial transactions and regulators trying to oversee the banks. The book is well-written, intelligent and entertaining.

The core of the both is a lexicon explaining clearly the meaning of terms such as "Securitization", "QE2", "CDO" or "Credit Default Swaps" that you may have heard in the financial press but never understood. Until 2008, you could make a case that you could just ignore all of this. But since millions of people have been thrown out of their jobs or lost their homes as a result of the financial crisis -- not to mention the enormous amount the government lent to bail out the banks -- all of us should have some understanding of finance that has become so important to the way the economy works. This is a good place to start.

Another benefit of reading this is that you may feel less intimidated by the small print in a mortgage or credit card agreement.

I expected to skim John Lanchester’s book titled, How to Speak Money: What the Money People Say--And What It Really Means. I’ve been involved in finance for four decades and know the terminology that Lanchester explains in clear prose in this finely written book. Instead of skimming, I read the book from cover to cover, including the complete lexicon that comprises two-thirds of the text. Thanks to Lanchester’s fine writing, I was delighted by his lighthearted and accurate presentation of the terms used by those in finance. I was amused by how many terms he defines as “another way of saying ‘sacking people’.” When I came to “onions,” I laughed out loud. Lanchester wrote this book to provide tools to non-finance people to understand the arcane terms used with ease by those in finance. Non-finance readers should love this book, and insiders may also find a lot both to learn and to enjoy from this finely written book.

The Problem with Money

John Lancaster is a novelist who is fascinated by economics. He wrote, "How to Speak Money" because he realized the general populace felt helpless in the face of the 2008 GFC, (Global Financial Crash). He believes that if people can grasp the fundamentals about the language of money, they will be prepared for political action necessary to respond to the next whale of a crash.

He uses his introduction and afterword to tell us how much trouble we are in. First, he convinces me that the belief in money is a necessary delusional fiction. Next, he convinces me that 2008 was only the appetizer for the real disaster that could hit us at any time. Thus his attempt to empower this reader ended up making me more anxious than informed.

The bulk of the book is a glossary of economic terms. His bias is towards those terms that tripped up the experts and alarmed the populace during the Global Financial Crash. In this sense, the terms are of historical interest rather than terms we need to understand the underlying forces of the economy we will live in now. Some of the entries are excellent, `price/earning ratio', for example. Mr. Lancaster uses clear language and vivid examples to make opaque terms comprehensible. Others are merely colorful rather than helpful such as `paradis fiscal' the French term for tax haven for example. Knowledge of this term will in what way prepare us for the next fiscal meltdown?

Implicit in this book is a critique of free markets and an openness to considering reasonable alternatives. I wish he had made that argument explicit and powerful. Ironically, Mr. Lancaster comes to us as a layperson who has particular writing skills that can communicate to us about where we are right now in the global economy. Because he isn't an economist, Lancaster lacks the confidence to make a completely coherent argument about our economy. Had he written like an expert, giving us his vision that as a novelist he is always imparting to a reader, this book would have been truly masterful.

Definitely the book to have on Chakras

I had been looking for awhile for a good book on Chakras that was straightforward and easy to undertsand. There are so many books on Chakras and many of them (at least the ones I found) went way too deep too fast and lost me. I needed a book that went Chakra by Chakra, explaining what each represents and providing some exercises to work them. This book was perfect! Each chakra chapter starts out with a one-pager with words that help explain that chakra (e.g. 1st Chakra - earth, roots, grounding, survival, body, food, beginning, etc). Then there is a meditation. Then there is text that walks through each type of description (e.g. "grounding"). Judith connects the concepts to the body and explains how its all connected. There are yoga exercises as well as recommended reading of other books to learn more about each Chakra. Excelent book - It really lays things out in a simple way that is straightforward and unmuddied. Lots of hand drawings throughout as well as some great quotes to ponder. Gods and Godesses are also mentioned in the text which is great. Excellent book!

Good book!! How can 100,000 readers go wrong??

This was my first book on the Chakra system and to be quite frankly it has been one of those books I always go back to look for references. My personal opinion is that Anodea Judith, PhD, has done an excellent book, both for the beginner in working and understanding the Chakras as well as the advanced.
Each chapter is dedicated to a particular Chakra. You will learn, the Sanskrit name to each Chakra, it's meaning, location, Element, Function, Inner State, Outer State, Body Parts, color, Mantra sound, Hindu Deity, as well as other deities from other pantheons. Also each chapter has a meditation on that particular Chakra as well as Yoga exercises to harness that particular Chakra to your favor. I have been directed to other books, because people say that there are better books out there. But to be honest this book for beginners is simple and right to the point. Anodea Judith, PhD writing is down to earth, and direct. Think about it, how can 100,000 readers go wrong. If you are looking for your first book on Chakras, you will not go wrong here. This is a good book, full of a wealth of information.

Should have been called Anodea's thoughts on Chakras.

I bought this book , after reading all the reviews written by Yoga teachers on this page. I was kind of disappointed with the quality of information in the book in quite many ways.
This book preaches a lot of good and useful things , right from diet to exercise to visualization. I liked the concept of balancing of chakras for kids and would help guide new or to-be parents. Also the fact presented in the book that women are ignored in most yogic scriptures which explain self realization.

But, there are some major doubts on the main subject being discussed in this book.
1. The author has suggested that use of LSD or Marijuana might be good to get a glimpse of what to expect when higher chakras get excited. There is no mention of which research led her to conclude the same. Please Do not believe this!!
2. For every Chakra the author mentions the Tarot Suit, Sephira, Archangel names. But there is not mention of why is there this association.
3. There is no or very less reference to Kundalini power. I would have expected a chapter dedicated to this with detailed references to the Nadis in the appendix. Any serious book on chakras would do that.
4. Too much visualization and imagery , and a lot less information of
Mantra Yoga ( Chanting Yoga used to steady the mind ).
5. Well , Jogging a aerobic exercises have been suggested to help balance the chakras. I agree , aerobic exercises and weights are excellent workout ( I myself am a kettlebell fan ).But these activities actually
increase excitation and the author seems to have left out important information on Pranayama. Seems strange for a PHD and Yoga teacher.
6. Kapalabhati and Mool Bandha, Ashwini Mudra are for the first 3 chakras, the author mentions them only for the 3rd chakra, and that too with no mention to their sanskrit names or their meanings.

Well, I would suggest anyone who wants to seriously understand chakras , to look elsewhere.There is a wealth of information on the internet.
No book may give you all the knowledge, but atleast take care that it does not give you incorrect information. Every person find's his or her own way to self realization.
I dont believe, that to understand eastern philosophy, the author needs to mix it with western philosophy and vice-versa. They are different schools of thought and both of them can co-exist independently. A person wishing to understand either of them just needs to gain a better understanding of the perception of each philosophy before diving into the details. I am going to go further in my study to understand and realise the chakras, but I am done with this book.
