A journalist who quit her job to earn a degree in theology, she was skeptical of New Age fads and utterly unprepared for the manifestation of her powers: impressions of the state of people's health that just popped, unbidden and unwelcome, into her head. Myss movingly describes how she learned to accept and utilize her intuitive gifts to help people understand the emotional and psychological roots of their illnesses and life crises. A Master Teacher

This was my first Caroline Myss book and I have since read--and heard--most of her others. I have put off writing a review until now, frankly because I wasn't sure if I could convey the tremendous impact her words and teachings have had in my life. (Actually, I think I just did!)
You may not agree with every single point she brings up and out, but that is part of it's strength: She makes you think, probe, ponder, contemplate and eventually assimilate her truths, along with so many others that speak the same, into your own life.
Caroline is a teacher in the finest sense: Her books, views, thoughts and musings compel one to seek their own truth, to heal one's self, not the easy way, but the BEST way--by tapping into the energy of Spirit and Love all around us. In this sense, she is a provocative Master.
One suggestion: If you have trouble getting through her books, her audio tapes are very good and truly relay the passion and commitment she feels in her life, her teachings.
Read her books, use what works for you -- and never be the same again.

and the fact that something like that even existed

I connected deeply with this book. It opened my eyes to being medical intuitive, and the fact that something like that even existed. I personally have had experiences with receiving medical impressions, but never knew it could be used in such a great way! I also connected with how Myss brings together the mind, body and spirit as a whole unit. How she breaks down that dysfunction in all areas can cause disease. With losing a parent to cancer, and seeing how much this book helped me relate to his dysfunctions. I wish I could have known some of these things then, but I am happy that I can take what I've learned from this book for myself and others. I have already recommended it to friends and family.

Most Comprehensive Book on Chakras & Energy Systems! Life Changing Read!

I will never be the same after reading this book. Doctor Myss' words were life-changing and placed me on a path that was healthier for my spirit. Until reading this book, I was miserable at work--to the point where I was having frequent nose bleeds and migraines. My job was very stressful and damaging to my health. Couple that with I was not happy with the work I was doing for others and I was on a one way path to a stroke or heart attack. Upon completing this book, I realized that I was really damaging myself for all the wrong reasons, I was letting my ego take the forefront and was ignoring my true call to help others--and it was over materialistic values (I've never been a person that valued things, but this book put into perspective that "possession of things" was not the only type of materialistic values there are). Doctor Myss provided me the insight to communicate with my spirit and do what is truly good for myself and others. I feel like I've added years to my life expectancy! I can't recommend this book enough! It is one of the best books that goes into depth on explaining the chakras and our energy sources. Absolutely beautiful!

Horror Novel Reviews: Honesty in the Terror

Reading Curtis Richards' novelization of John Carpenter's iconic motion picture, Halloween, proved more than rewarding. It's not a stretch to open the book and anticipate a carbon copy of John's film. But readers are in store for something with quite a bit more depth. Sure the story follows the picture's occurrences and blueprint with strong faith - even utilizing a good 90 percent of the feature's original dialogue - but there's an internal examination put to work that cannot be relayed through film. Sans the inclusion of shifting first person narratives, it's impossible to know what cycles through the minds of the victims and protagonists on screen.

The novel however grants fans that missing element. Knowing the amalgamation of thoughts that course through the noggins of each focal character drastically alters the dynamics of the story. In reading the novel, we actually get to know Laurie Strode, Sam Loomis and the reckless youth who prance about this tale, on a much more personal level. Emotions that can only be showcased through facial expressions, dialogue and body language, in front of a camera, take on a whole new life as we're subjected to unspoken feelings.

If Halloween the film was a shocking genre feature, the novel is a shocking character study with all the visceral impact delivered by the motion picture itself. Within the novels pages, for example, Laurie, while innocent, certainly isn't quite as pure as what we perceive when viewing the 1978 classic. She's a good girl, but her thoughts certainly wander. That difference is pronounced because, as I've noted, we actually get a chance to climb inside Laurie's head. Dare I say the interior is equally, if not more compelling than the exterior?

But there's another level of this story that really shines, and helps to explain the Myers mythology. We don't get much of a chance to study a young Mike in the film, and we're not gifted much of a look at the time that passes between 1963 and 1978. However, Richards' tale offers a wealth of information and backstory to take in. In fact, I really wish Rob Zombie had studied this novel thoroughly before attempting to illustrate the lost years of Michael Myers in Zombie's first Halloween flick.

In the backstory produced by Richards, we learn that there is, unquestionably a supernatural element to the boy. The conjecture produced by the film is inked in fairly bulbous fashion in this book. Furthermore, we learn that this strange affliction has long existed in the Myers bloodline. These are facts that Sam Loomis knows, and uses as a tool to lobby for Michael's long term confinement.

It almost works.

Myers' escape tactic in the novel works a parallel course to the escape in the film, as does the bulk of the action. The treasure really does hit readers in small, controlled doses. Every minor cliff hanger or question left floating in the film is answered within these pages. A simple example of the attention invested in minor details here can be detected in the scene in which Annie and Laurie stumble right into the path of Annie's father, Sheriff Brackett, after hastily extinguishing a joint. Watching the film, it's obvious that the sheriff would catch a whiff of that ganja, but not a word is mentioned. In the novel, Brackett makes a light hearted remark about their drug use after Annie and Laurie have taken off to leave the sheriff to his duties.

These miniscule differences are what make the novel so special.

On paper, Myers is damn near as frightening as he is on screen. However, there's a somewhat more... human element to his character. He's significantly more vocal (not words so much as load and frequent grunts and growls), not quite as impervious to pain as we know him to be on film. Stab him onscreen, he simply shrugs it off, within this novel however, he not only feels it, but is markedly more effected. As unstoppable as Michael seems, Richards endows him with a more detectable level of vulnerability. I can't really call him more human, although he clearly thinks, and he clearly understands his actions. He's simply a slicker villain than the picture leads us to believe.

Any fan of the Halloween genre should seek this novel adaptation out as soon as possible. It's a stellar addition to the franchise as a whole, unfortunately, it's a pretty difficult piece of work to track down; at least for a fair price.

An excellent book on algorithm analysis

The book represents a well written, consistent and easy to follow view on the area of algorithm analysis. It gives an excellent overview of various mathematical and computer science areas, including but not limited to combinatorial geometry, NP-problems, complexity theory, graph theory, algorithm analysis, dynamic programming and even computational geometry.
Most of the chapters are intended for a senior level undergraduate and graduate student, but some (such as part 4 devoted to complexity problems) are more suitable for "mature" audience and require some preliminary knowledge in the area.
I found chapters on sorting, data structures, recursion and functional programming well written and structured, and examples to be practical as well as informative.
Sections on amortized analysis, randomized algorithms, approximation algorithms and iteration improvement deal with current directions in the algorithmic research and provide an excellent overview of the "state-of-the-art" in these areas. I also enjoyed reading through the section on greedy algorithms (shortest path and minimum spanning tree problems).
Section on computational complexity and analysis of the relationship between complexity classes seems to be a bit complicated, those who are interested in this area should probably do some preliminary reading.
The last section on computational geometry (my area of expertise) and applications of Voronoi diagrams could be extended, but even in the current state it givs a pretty good idea of what computational geometry is all about.
Overall, I give to this book a "5 star" review and recommend it for anyone who is seriously interested in learning exactly how algorithm design and analysis work. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can only wish that author would write more books like that in the future!

Overpriced, uninspired.

I've used this book for my undergraduate algorithms class and I must say, I find it incredibly frustrating. I will say it is not all bad. The book does a decent job of providing grounded explanations, but fails miserably in numerous ways. Just a few of my more basic issues with the book are as follows.

1. A multitude of grammatical flaws. The book was, by definition, poorly edited. This is unacceptable when considering the outlandish price.

2. There are absolutely no solutions. I don't believe all or even most solutions need be present, but this is a fairly common practice that is completely ignored by this book and only works to hinder students confidence in whether or not they've successful absorbed and digested the material. The book is also not commonly used, so there is little to no discussion online of common issues experienced with the book.

3. The book lacks some of the more detailed mathematical explanations that some students might be looking for. This may only be an issue for a small subset of students, but is certainly worth noting, when such explanations are easily found in other, more effectives texts.

4. All counting in the book starts at 1, not 0. This is subjective and in fact most algorithms textbooks do this, but I still personally find it annoying when implementing algorithms based on the books pseudocode, the format of which I am also not a fan. If you find yourself in the same boat, consider reading this threads explanation on why many textbooks do this. [...]

As you can see others have had success with this book and it is certainly possible to learn from this book, but I thoroughly believe there are better, far more effective books for teaching a class on Algorithms. Personally, I would suggest either The Algorithm Design Manual or Introduction to Algorithms, 3rd Edition (MIT Press). Neither books are without their flaws, but both are clearly stronger choices than this. Especially considering they are significantly cheaper and there is far more information available on the specifics covered in either of them.

Better than the other books.. but not perfect

This is a great book overall, but I give it 4 stars as it lacks the mathematical explanations that I personally was looking for. I am graduate student in Computer Science and a E-Commerce Consultant by profession. This book is more detailed than the Sedweick (I can't spell his name) in the sense that it has some more of a mathematical approach. It lacks the level of explanation that the Sedweick book provided. It has some math, but overlooks some steps thus targeting someone with a pretty solid math background, not someone with sophomore level undergraduate math background.
Overall.. if you're a student taking an algorithms or advanced algorithms class (especially a graduate class), you might want to invest in this book.

About the Author

Richard T. Corlett, Research Professor and Director of Center for Integrative Conservation, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Richard Corlett obtained his first degree from the University of Cambridge in 1974, followed by a PhD in plant ecology at the Australian National University, with fieldwork in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. He has subsequently held teaching posts at the University of Chiang Mai (1980-82), National University of Singapore (1982-87, 2008-2012), and the University of Hong Kong (1988-2008). In 2012 he moved to the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Yunnan, to take charge of a new Center for Integrative Conservation. His major research interests include terrestrial ecology and biodiversity conservation in tropical East Asia, plant-animal interactions, urban ecology, invasive species, and the impacts of climate change. He was elected President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC) in 2012.

Introduction

How to Use This Book to Save Time and to

Write Compelling Performance Goals

Setting goals for your employees—or, more accurately, helping

them set appropriate goals for themselves—is a very individualized

and personal endeavor. Adding the right elements to the

recipe, so to speak, therefore varies significantly depending on

the individual’s needs and aspirations. Still, your key focus

always lies in customizing a blueprint or template for success to

help your staff members find new ways of increasing their own

productivity, which of course improves your departmental and

ultimately company performance.

Creating Development Plans for Employees

So how exactly should you go about creating individual development

plans for your subordinates, and, more importantly, how

can this book help you get there? First and foremost, always ask

your employees for their input. Without your subordinates’

involvement, drafting development plans in goal statements

becomes hit or miss. Second, realize that employees will remain

loyal to their companies—regardless of headhunters’ calls luring

them away to greener pastures—as long as they’re on a positive

career growth trajectory and they feel appreciated for what they

contribute. This so-called psychic income serves as the glue that

binds workers to their organizations, and it’s clearly the most significant

element of any development plan.

If you convince subordinates that achieving specific goals at

work equates to adding vivid bullets to their resumes, then you’ll

develop an accomplishment mentality that enables your employees

not only to motivate themselves but also to reinvent themselves

in light of your organization’s changing needs. That’s

where an average manager or supervisor steps up to become an

outstanding leader. Great leaders know how to set up their subordinates

for success. Then they simply step aside and get out of

the way.

When you describe the best bosses and mentors that you’ve

had in your career, you’re more than likely to use the verb “to be”

rather than “to do.” In fact, in all human relations, “beingness”

typically trumps “doingness” because the greatest influencers on

our lives were loving, supportive, caring, patient, and selfless in

guiding us. And those traits all came much more from who they

were than what they did. In other words, providing others direction

and offering guidance is actually a lot easier than you think.

It’s simply a matter of being a selfless leader who’s committed to

balancing the company’s needs with those of the individual

worker.

If you’re able to make this one paradigm shift in your belief

system—that great leaders focus on being rather than on

doing—you’ll cut a lot of stress out of your life and develop

teams that will remain very loyal to you. Loyalty begets respect,

respect begets devotion, and we all know that devoted employees

will give you 110% of their efforts. In short, if you command

employees from the top down, you’ll get no more than 100% of

their efforts out of their sense of compliance. But if you can

touch their hearts and help them to love you as their boss and

mentor, you’ll build amazingly strong teams with lots of camaraderie

and teamwork and, in so doing, catapult your own career

to new heights.

With these simple premises in mind, understand that you’re

not responsible for motivating your team. Motivation is internal,

and I can’t motivate you any more than you can motivate me.

However, as a leader within your organization, you are indeed

responsible for creating an environment in which people can

motivate themselves. And that fine distinction is where this book

can come in rather handy.

● Think relationship first, transaction second.

● Realize that people can tell more about you by the depth

of your questions than by the quality of your statements.

● Separate the people from the problem.

● Heed Mark Twain’s adage: “If we were meant to talk

more than we listen, we would have two mouths and

one ear.”

● Always provide two solutions for each question you

ask or suggestion you raise.

● Employ right-brain imagination, artistry, and intuition

plus left-brain logic and planning.

● Convert “yes . . . but” to “yes . . . and” statements to

acknowledge the speaker’s point of view and to share

additional insights.

Likewise, recognizing that managing in corporate America

today is fraught with legal peril for the unsuspecting leader, keep

sage guidance like the following in mind:

● Never promise confidentiality before knowing the

nature of the question or request.

● Employ the attorney-client privilege by copying

our in-house counsel, asking for a legal analysis

and opinion, and limiting your audience to as

few individuals as possible.

● Recognize that the fundamental claim of unfairness

may become the basis for a legal charge of

discrimination.

Don’t forget the importance of finding your own work-life

balance and peace of mind as you face the daily grind and challenges

that come your way throughout your career.

● Practice the adage, “What you want for yourself, give to

another.”

● Convince team members not to act on principle to the

extent that their positions become rigid and self-justified,

allowing for little compromise.

● Put others’ needs ahead of your own, and expect them

to respond in kind.

● Realize that people don’t necessarily resist change; they

just resist being changed.

● Accept that no one does anything wrong given their

model of the world; therefore, look for common interests

and underlying concerns if you need to heal a wound on

your team.

● Ensure that your team communicates upward and asks

for permission up front rather than for forgiveness after

the fact.

● Teach what you choose to learn.

● Help your team find individual and creative solutions by

asking, “I realize you don’t know, but if you did know,

what would your recommendation be?”

● Change your perspective, and you’ll change your

perception.

I find the phrases exceptionally helpful in this new goal-setting book just as they were in the performance appraisal phrase book written by Paul Falcone. He does an excellent job capturing hard to describe style and personality traits, which other books lack. But what I like best is his introduction -- It provides great advice and wisdom in terms of managing your own career and becoming an effective leader. Sound advice that can be practically applied and implemented--very valuable.

An excellent resource for the busy manager.

As a people manager in todays world, where there never seems to be enough time to do everything you need to do , I've found this book invaluable. It's saved me hours, while allowing me to still be accurate and focused on managing my team.

Sometimes half the battle is figuring out the right way to say what you need to, and that's where this book comes in. Its incredibly helpful at precisely articulating the goals that I want to agree with my people. It's also very helpful for quickly finding and capturing hard-to-define goals relating to employees' personalities and work styles. A perfect tool for todays busy managers. Excellent.

2600 Phrases provides a frame work for writing goals

This book is definitely a "must have" resource guide for managers and supervisors tired of putting in long hours to develop performance goals for their employees. The book provides example goals for many core competencies such as customer service, productivity and volume, and organizational-planning skills. The second section of the book focuses on goals for specific industries.

Each goal also provides a wide range of suggestions on what the goal should look like at 4 different levels within the organization, entry level career, administrative/operational support, individual contributor, front-line supervisor and senior leader.

The book is a starting point, a framework, for writing goals. It is important to remember, however, the SMART rule for setting goals. Supervisors can use the information within the book then flesh them out with measures and time constraints.

Very education book, well recommended.

This book has been a hit at my office. We deal with OpenStack and Ceph, so far almost everyone in my office has stolen this book from me and learned a lot from it. I, myself, have not been able to finish it yet but I can tell it's got great articles, excellent examples, just an all around great book.

If you are trying to learn Ceph, this is definitely the book to start with.

Not There Yet!

Overall it is a good reading for Ceph. It is for IT Salesmen in Conferences; CEPH reading with marketing key words "Very Scale-able & Reliable & No Vendor Lock!" repeated ten times every chapter :-)

If you are seeking for a Detailed Software Defined Storage with CEPH book, this may not be a good choice for you as Author by-passes the network part of the CEPH deployment by only saying 1Gbps interface is good to start with (for future wise you may use 10Gbps) without talking about data block sizes, how many read/write operations a usual Application (Web , DB, AAA etc) performs that will tie with throughput need for storage access specifications.
Or How DC Network Topology (2 Tier/ 3 Tier) ties with CEPH Tree deployment model.
Author throws CPU/Memory Calculations from his experimental deployment experiences (I assume) and recommending; 1 CPU core (no speed given or no mention on vCPU with overcommit) & 2GB Mem for mon, 2 Cores & 1GB Mem for osd, 4 Cores & 2GB Mem for mds without giving any real number based calculation behind so you can use for your dimensioning of your CEPH Cluster design.

I hope second edition covers these points so we can have a good reference Software Defined Storage with CEPH in DataCenter book.

I ordered this book with the hope to get a good understanding on Ceph, setting it up and its internals. For me personally it did not achieve these goals. My main concern about the book is that it is very superficial and doesn't provide much background.

The author is a member of the Ceph community and is a big fan of Ceph. This can be seen throughout the book and the tone in which it is written, but he fails to stay objective and doesn't provide justification for his arguments.

For example Chapter 3 and 4 are respectively on 'Ceph architecture and components' and 'Ceph Internals'. The chapters overall show a few block diagrams, brief descriptions of the components, but don't really describe how it works or why things work that way. Most of these chapters is just focused on some of the Ceph commands instead of real background.

Various chapters are devoted to setup and configuration of Ceph, for a big part using the ceph-deploy script. It shows various of the commands to yield a basic demo cluster, but again no justification on why certain settings or options were chosen.

Overall for me this book is like a glorified tutorial, but it doesn't provide much background or reasoning. The tutorials and videos on the Ceph site are a lot better. I would strongly to use the Ceph site. There is nothing really this books adds.
