Cracks in the crystal ball

This book almost won the .NET Core 1.0 publication race. The first book/s on a new technology sell more and thus make more money but the 'best' books come later. It's obvious the author was using an early version (probably RC1) of .NET Core when writing this book. Unfortunately, RC2 removed the command line tools and opted to release them in 'Previews'. As of today (30 May 2016) the tooling preview is preview 1. Preview 1 does not contain all the functionality that's shown in this book. For example, page 19 talks about the REPL. The REPL is not currently available. On page 21 it states that you can compile a program to native code using this command line: > dotnet build --native. No, you can't. Running that will give you an error. The note (in the insert) on page 22 mentions the 'dotnet compile' command but that currently is not available either. Maybe these tools will be available in the future, maybe not. For now the book leaves the reader scratching their head.

Also, (Code on page 20) the NetStandard.Library moniker shown under the "dependencies" section of the sample project.json file is obsolete. It has been replaced by Microsoft.NETCore.App. This mistake propagates into subsequent chapters.

If the code is still in RC or Preview status, write a blog post or at most, a 200-300 page book on getting started. Don't write the 1400+ page professional edition until development slows down. To learn more about the current state of .NET Core, read Microsoft's .NET blog.

Comprehensive Coverage of every C# 6 & .NET Core technology, but let down a little by the examples

Really pleased with this and it offers comprehensive coverage of every aspect of .Net Core. My only issue is that while there are downloadable example projects for each chapter, they were written with a pre-release version of VS/.Net Core/Win 10/whatever, so when you load them up in Visual Studio, all of the external references are broken and they wont compile.

The place to start for the beginner!

I really grooved on this book and the CD that came along with it. The lessons were easy to understand even for a total beginner like I was. Lots of practice and going over the lessons again and again will teach the beginner a TON and help improve the skills of an existing player.

A good place to start

This series (Guitar Method 1, 2, and 3) has been the staple of my guitar lessons for many years. It works well with students who are in the 5th grade and above, providing material that builds on the prior lessons nicely as students move forward. The student will not only learn good technique but will gain a basic knowledge of music theory along the way. Using the CD helps the student to develop rhythm and learn how to play better in a group/band. My younger students (1st to 4th grade) do better with Mel Bay's "Children's Guitar Method" series for kids.

Awful, don't waste your money

Only paid ~$12 for this textbook used and thought was getting a great deal. Now, I know why it was so cheap. Even at a little less then $12, it's a total rip-off. Just look up the steps at Office.com for free and they will make more sense. I burned this textbook in my fireplace; it wasn't even worth trying to re-sell.

Good, but low-level

This book definitely taught me a lot about Access, but I think it could have been condensed into roughly 25% of the size by leaving out extremely easy details. The instructions for making a form would be listed out in excruciating details from a, b, c, ..., to p or q in most cases. This is a great book if you are totally new at using a computer (there are instructions on how to locate Access in the start menu), but if you have more than basic knowledge of computing, it will seem like it was written for a second-grader.

Dr. Kritikos has written, reviewed and presented numerous papers for a multitude of organizations and is the author of the textbook, Special Education Assessment: Issues and Strategies Affecting Today’s Classrooms.

Dr. Phyllis LeDosquet is an associate professor in early childhood special education in the Department of Special Education at Northeastern Illinois University where she has coordinated and taught courses in the early childhood special education program for seven years. She has over 20 years experience in the assessment of infants, toddlers, and young children with exceptional learning needs and has provided support to children, families and educators in both home and school environments.

Dr. Mark Melton, LCSW, is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at Northeastern Illinois University, where he has taught for five years. Dr. Melton has experience as a classroom teacher, school administrator, and clinical supervisor in various special education settings. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Melton maintains a private practice in clinical social work supporting children with behavioral and regulatory challenges and their families.

Very basic book that tries to cover much but is mostly a quick run through most models. This book is for the very novice audience who havs no idea what marketing analytics is all about. It tells you about a model, gives you a name (e.g. Regression), followed by a paragraph of explanation and a very basic example. If you have any experience in the marketing field this book is not for you. It is mostly for undergraduate students (definitely not for graduate students). You can use it as a starting point to know what exists out there but don't think this book will take you into any depths into these models and you would not be able to really use these in real work situations.

I bought this for the EdX course/certificate by the same author. Frankly, the course was pretty useless and mostly just copies and pastes from the book. I am not basing my review on the course, however.

As for the book, it seems like this would be good as *part* of a course, but it's not really filling enough by itself. At times, the writer just needs to spit out the information instead of adding words to extend the pages. It felt like I had to dig more than I should have. As this is an area of interest for me, I plan to finish the book, but I'll be seeking more complete information with better examples and explanations.

Definitions are laid out nicely and clearly in the book so you can quickly learn those. It's more the context that seems sometimes missing.

Also, some of the information, such as equations, differed in the course. I don't really know if I trust the book completely because of that.

I really liked this book for the following reasons

Taking the author's Marketing Analytics class over the summer, I really liked this book for the following reasons:
1. Models (contribution margin, return on investment, YOY growth and lifetime value) for the chapter business strategy are great and very valuable. The company I work for uses different approaches, but we used his model and essentially came close to our own approaches. His models are fairly easy to understand.
2. He gives real life examples for companies we all know of such as Zanga, Oracle, American Airlines.
3. Overall, the book offers a lot of value to me as I continue to grow as a market analyst. In the end, it's a very resourceful book.

Reasons why I felt it could be better:
1. Some models are really complicated and hard to understand. Even after rereading it several times, it doesn't translate in Excel. Maybe include youtube videos to walk through models.
2. Model examples are very easy. We all know that real life is more complicated.
3. Even after comprehending the models, interpreting the outputs isn't explained well.

Aparte de esto, la edición para Kindle, que fue la que leí, tiene muchos errores de edición como puntuación en lugares equivocados y párrafos duplicados que entorpecen la lectura. El trabajo de edición haría la lectura cómoda, mas me temo que no podría recomendar el texto.

In these recent interviews the nine writers recall their lives in Beat bohemia and discuss their artistic practices. Nancy M. Grace outlines the goals and revelations of the interviews, and introduces the community of female Beat writers created in their conversations with the authors.

Although they have not received attention equal to the men, women Beat writers rebelled against mainstream roles for young women and were exuberant participants in creating the Beat scene. Mapping their unique identities in the Beat movement, Ronna C. Johnson shows how their poetry, fiction, and memoirs broke the male rule that defined Beat women as silent bohemian "chicks" rather than artistic peers.

Breaking the Rule of Cool combines the interviews with literary criticism and biography to illustrate the vivacity and intensity of women Beat writers, and argues that American literature was revitalized as much by the women's work as by that of their male counterparts.

Nancy M. Grace, a professor of English at the College of Wooster, is the author of The Feminized Male Character in Twentieth-Century Literature. Her work has appeared in Contemporary Literature, the Beat Scene, and the Artful Dodge.

Ronna C. Johnson, a lecturer in English and American Studies at Tufts University, has been published in College Literature, the Review of Contemporary Fiction, and the Poetry Project Newsletter. Johnson and Grace are the editors of and contributors to Girls Who Wore Black: Women Writing the Beat Generation.
