Piero della Francesca: Artist and Man, by James R. Banker

Largely neglected for the four centuries after his death, the fifteenth century Italian artist Piero della Francesca is now seen to embody the fullest expression of the Renaissance perspective painter, raising him to an artistic stature comparable with that of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

But who was Piero, and how did he become the person and artist that he was? Until now, in spite of the great interest in his work, these questions have remained largely unanswered. Piero della Francesca: Artist and Man integrates the story of Piero's artistic and mathematical achievements with the full chronicle of his life for the first time, fortified by the discovery of over one hundred previously unknown documents, most unearthed by the author himself.

The book presents us with Piero's friends, family, and collaborators, all set against the social background of the various cities and courts in which he lived - from the Tuscan commune of Sansepolcro in which he grew up, to Renaissance Florence, Ferrara, Ancona, Rimini, Rome, Arezzo, and Urbino, and eventually back to his home town for the final years of his life. As Banker shows, the cultural contexts in which Piero lived are crucial for understanding both the man and his paintings.

What emerges is a thoroughly intriguing Renaissance individual, firmly embedded in his social milieu, but forging an historic identity through his profound artistic and mathematical achievements.

Review

"James R. Banker's Piero della Francesca: Artist and Man reminds us that...the human scale of his art--the ability to have his divine characters look us square in the eye as our eyes square up the mathematically intense realism of his worlds--never gets old."

About the Author

James R. Banker is professor emeritus of Italian history at North Carolina State University, and lives for most of the year in Florence and Sansepolcro. An expert on the life and works of Piero della Francesca and Sassetta, two artists closely associated with San Sepolcro, his research has emphasized the role of lay religion in the lives of early Renaissance Italians, and the role of patrons, lay and clerical, in the paintings of both Sassetta and Piero. Author of numerous articles on Renaissance themes, his books include Death in the Community: Memorialization and Confraternities in an Italian Commune and, most recently, The Culture of San Sepolcro During the Youth of Piero della Francesca.

Piero's Life and Work in a Superb New Study
By Kenneth Hughes
James R. Banker is Professor Emeritus of Italian History at North Carolina State University. For many years he has spent most of his time in Florence and in Sansepolcro, Piero's home town in the Tuscan hills southeast of Florence. He has written dozens of articles and books on Italian history and culture of the Quattrocento, concentrating especially on Sansepolcro and the life, times, and artistry of Piero. His current book is the summation of his years of archival research, scholarly sleuthing, and thoughtful consideration, and it is an outstanding study. Although not trained as an art historian per se, Prof. Banker has spent at least as much time steeped in the aura of Piero's art as anyone else, and his voice is as authoritative as any of the specialists in art history who have written before him. Indeed, his expertise in social and cultural history and his archival work (which has unearthed a considerable number of hitherto unknown documents pertaining to Piero) enable him to discuss the painter's works in their social context more specifically and with greater certainty than most art historians do. That combination makes for one of the book's most engaging features, its balance between discussion of the artworks and examination of what else was going on in the artist's life at the time.

One of the most difficult things in writing about Piero is to figure out exactly where he was at any specific time, given the general scarcity of documentation. But where he was determines also what he was doing, because you can't paint a fresco unless you're there, and, conversely, to date a painting means pinning the artist down to the particular place at the particular time. Prof. Banker's complete mastery of whatever documentation there is--contracts, letters, signed witnesses to marriages, dowries, the sale of everything from land to woad (the source of much of the town's wealth) and every other imaginable written source--enables him to construct a very convincing itinerary and, therefore, a persuasive timeline for Piero's major paintings. Many scholars have contended that it is difficult to date Piero's paintings because there is not much apparent development or evidence of evolving style in them. But the author's ability to construct a plausible timeline from extrinsic evidence has led him to discern for the first time three distinct phases in Piero's work, based on the painter's use of perspective, proportion, and spatial organization--three major components of his painterly practice throughout his life, but with shifting emphasis. The discussion of Piero's mathematical work follows along with the examination of his life and art; the writer is keen to show how Piero's interest in perspective and proportionality continually informs his artistic practice and vice-versa, and when it comes to the painter's later years, when his absorption in his geometrical treatises displaced much of his painterly activity, the discussion reveals Piero to have been one of the most gifted and original mathematicians of his time, a man whose "visual acumen" (216) was the source of both his brilliant painting and his brilliant geometrical theorizing. Piero emerges as a true "Renaissance man" equal in genius to Leonardo and Michelangelo, indeed, "the most intellectual painter of the Quattrocento" (1).

Prof. Banker has taken an excellent look at Piero as "Artist and Man," a fine model of what a life-and-work study of an artist should be. His writing is organized, lucid, and approachable--almost conversational--throughout. The volume has generous scholarly apparatus in the form of maps and figures of geometrical bodies, a chronology, extensive selected bibliography and index. There are ten color plates of major paintings and thirty-one black-and-white illustrations. Unfortunately, the majority of the paintings discussed are reproduced only in black and white on text paper and are neither very clear nor in very useful contrast; it will pay to have an album of good reproductions at hand while reading. That is the only negative criticism I have of this book, which is in every other way outstanding and highly recommended.

The great Piero book now is James Banker’s Piero della Francesca
By Bill Berkson
The great Piero book now is James Banker’s Piero della Francesca, Artist and Man. It is astonishing in many ways. Banker began simply as a historian studying the medieval commune of San Sepolcro, found Piero in that mix, and busied himself writing two books on the documentation, such as it is, of Piero in the town archives. That started maybe 30 years ago. Now he has written about every aspect of Piero––artist, mathematician, possible architect, citizen, family man––connecting many dots, dispelling old hearsay notions, giving a very fine sense of who this Piero may have been, his boundless curiosity and intellectual connections, and how he did what he did. There are parts I disagree with (especially Banker's interpretation of The Flagellation, which all too easily dismisses the Oriental look of the lefthand foregound figure), and you must be prepared for Banker’s rather hard-nosed refusal to see the kind of spiritual (if not Platonic) light that nonetheless many of us cannot help but see. But it is very good history, plainly written––"just the facts," as it were, with straight declarative sentences abounding–– and eventually had me in tears, both for the understanding of Piero himself and for Banker’s devotion.

Piero in Evidence
By David Maxim
Banker's biography is beautifully written, beautifully clear. He presents evidence of Piero's whereabouts at certain times in the artist's life heretofore sketchy in details as though he were solving a mystery in a way that is compelling for the reader to continue on.

Totem and Taboo (1913), first published as a series of four articles between 1912 and 1913, is among Freud's most dazzling speculative texts.

Adducing evidence from "primitive" tribes, neurotic women, child patients traversing the oedipal phase, and speculations by Charles Darwin, James G. Frazer, and other modern scholars, Freud attempts to trap the moment that civilized life began. It stands as his most imaginative venture into the psychoanalysis of culture.

The unconscious rides again!
By Roberto P. De Ferraz
And this time trough those primitive manifestations performed by that very primitive peoples like aborigenes from Australia, North and South America indians and many others discovered by colonization european, manifestation that we are used to call by Totem and Taboo. This is the standard Freud's view on the subject and to understand this book is a necessary step to proceed to other important Freud's work like Moses and Monotheism, The Future of an Ilusion and many others, where he approaches with reluctance the idea of religion as an offspring of early animism.
The prior standard way of seeing these types of primitive manifestation was to see them trough the amount of dread the primitive men have against the manifestation of some praeternatural agency, to use a term used by Mr.Thorstein Veblen, a contemporary of Freud, in his magnificent book on the leisure class (The Theory of the Leisure Class). It is worthy to note that nobody can be sure on the origins of this type of tradition and that adds substance to Mr.Freud's arguments.
Sigmund Freud goes a step further to the classical view and says that totemism and taboo as animism are the manifestation of something not outside ourselves but rather inside human minds of the primitive people, where the unconscious played a good part to the forming of this kind of culture manifestation and where there is an intricate and unconscious and almost mathematical calculation in order to attribute to the priest-king, who typifies the carrier of this tradition, both the pleasures and the burden of the function. In Freud's view, both totem and taboo are traditions that have to find their origim in the unconscious of that primitive folks and not in the concurrence of fear to the dead, following the tradition of his many other books on the latent manifestations of the unconscious. The ritual and actual killing of the father by the Horde or Band of Brothers, who are in search of vital space for their development, is the real reason behind all that happens afterwards and, following Freud's hypotheses, are the groundwork of modern and ancient religion.
The concepts here explained will be fundamental to the development of the hypotheses developed latter in Moses and Monotheism.

Australian Aborigines and Freud's "Neurotic" Patients
By Panagiotis Varlagas
This is the first Freud book I have ever read. I am not a trained psychiatrist, or sociologist, or ethnologist, so I am going to review the book from a layman's standpoint.
In this work, Freud draws heavily on observations and theories of ethnology, emphasizing on studies of Australian aborigines and Frazer's work. He draws a parellel with his personal observations from treatment of "neurotic" patients and claims to have found common patterns in these two classes of subjects, which tend to explain certain social and psychological phenomena, as well as the "birth" of religion.
He focuses on the concepts of "Totem" and "Taboo". While familiar with taboo (although our understanding of the term is narrower than Freud's), totem is remote to us. Certain aboriginal peoples were grouped in social groupings, centered on the cult of and belief of descent from a certain animal. So, you are the "Kangaroo tribe", we are the "Ostrich tribe" etc. The topic most interesting Freud, to which he devotes the first essay in the book, is "exogamy", i.e. marriage outside one's group. This practice of exogamy seems to be in contradiction to what is pursued by some ethnic groups in America (Jews and Greeks come to mind) i.e. "endogamy" - a push to have children marry within their parents' ethnic group. This practice of exogamy in Australian aborigines is attributed by Freud to fear of incest, with quite convincing arguments.

What is challening is to concoct a theory that suggests totemism and exogamy are not orthogonal social institutions that just happenned to coexist, but intricately bound together. Freud accomplishes that through intricate reasoning that draws heavily on religion (in his 4th essay). His argumentation may seem far-fetched to many, but is plausible, although it is hard to get convinced that it is the single, or most probable, theory explaining the issue.
Freud makes the analogy that what primitive people are to ethnography, "neurotics" are to psychoanalysis and tries to map patterns from one domain to the other. Another goal is to establish the theory of totemism as the primordial religion from which all known religions and beliefs have spawned over time. The fact that Hinduists rever and never kill cows, seems to me (my example, not Freud's) to support this theory; Hinduists could be considered an outgrowth of a "Cow totem". Also, in modern Judeochristian societies, the totem, for intermarriage avoidance, has been replaced by the blood relatives group. Greek civil law for instance, forbids marrying blood relatives to the 4th degree and relatives through marriage to the 3th degree (i.e. after marriage your also become a member of your spouse's "totem" - for life).
His 2nd essay discusses the concept of taboo. He defines it as "a set of limitations that primitive people apply to themselves". He contends that people who do "taboo things" become taboo themselves (certainly prostitutes would fit that profile). In our modern society, one's car is taboo, such as one's tools and guns were in prehistory.
Deists may have a hard time with Freud, especially since he states "we know well that just like gods, demons too are figments of the human imagination". Freud was an atheist and his train of thought is naturally and instictively atheistic, and this could be challenging for a deist.
Amazing is how some taboos of primitive times, remain alive, even in a degenerate form, in our times. For instance, just as primitives of New Guinea don't eat meat after killing an enemy (a taboo), modern Greek Orthodox people don't eat meat in the lunch following the funeral ceremony (only fish and veggies allowed). Also, the "dirtiness" taboo, where primitives were subjected to purification ceremonies, seems to be alive in the Eastern Orthodox sacrament of baptism where the to-be-christened baby is washed in the baptisery. Female "uncleanliness" during menstruation is also taboo in the Eastern Church; women are never allowed in the santum (blood taboo). It is considered taboo in Greek to say that a woman is menstruating, whereas politeness calls to say that "she feels sick". Also, the death taboo is alive in an incomprehensible to me (but "self-evident" to them as Freud would say) avoidance by many to refer to cancer by its name, opting instead the expressions "the bad thing" or "the cursed disease".
Also, the taboo, Freud mentions, whereby the archpriest of Zeus in Rome, was forbidden to ride horses, seems to be alive, in that the heads of states rarely drive cars themselves, but are rather given a ride by their chauffers. Regarding king-priests, last time I checked the Queen of England was also the head of the Church of England...

The third essay (animism and magic) is also important. Interestingly, Freud considers animism as the only weltanschaung completely and comprehensively (albeit incorrectly) explaining world's nature. He does not believe that subsequent religious and scientific weltanschaungen have achieved this. The animism->religion->science progression of world views discussed is extremely important and core for understanding his work. I guess that were he alive and learned that 90% of Americans are religious (Source: Euronews) he would be rather skeptical of the "progress" of mankind...
In his fourth essay, he returns to totemism, reaching the culmination of this work, in an awe-inspiring scene, where the young brothers kill and devour their own father. This vivid scene of patricide, which he subsequently manages to mitigate, suggesting the possibility that it was perpetrated only in people's minds (temptation), he proclaims as the original sin of mankind, which young males throughout the millenia try to redeem. This theory is highly controversial, albeit very interesting and thought-provoking. This scene is worth the whole book not only for its intensity, but also for the dexterity with which Freud creatively combines and correlates findings from fields so diverse, such as psychiatry, psychology, sociology, ethnology, religion, and philosophy, along with deep understanding of the human psyche, to reach a conclusion of such importance, and arguably impact, regarding who we are, and why we are doing things the way we are.

A perfect exemplar of Freud's central arguments
By Amazon Customer
Totem and Taboo, along with _The Future of an Illusion_, should be necessary reading for any serious student of social science. Of course, there are massive holes in Freud's arguments (such as his tendancy to make sweeping generalizations about other cultures from his armchair in Europe), but people who disagree with him for moral and ethical reasons tend to amplify those holes and simply ridicule Freud the man instead of intelligently approaching his arguments.
The fact is, his suppositions about parental relations (as they relate to "totem" cultures), about religion, and about sexuality are extremely relevant and have proven, over the years, to possess an extraordinary predictive power. Even if one disagrees with this literature, one should read it and know exactly what they disagree with.

Needed: A New Publishing for Stephen Mitchell's Translation
By J. Hansen
Too bad this book is out of print. This is the most marvelous translation! The clarity of the story and the beauty of the poetry make it so worthwhile reading; the Afterword and Notes present further opportunities for study. A very scholarly work, I at last feel that I really understand the Book of Job, after years of questioning passages which lacked adequate translation into today's English. Stephen Mitchell has done the English-speaking world a great service. This book deserves a new publishing, in paperback, as well as in hardback.

The Operas of Verdi: Volume 1: From Oberto to Rigoletto, by Julian Budden

Marked by extraordinary research and enhanced by hundreds of musical illustrations, this monumental study follows the development of Verdi's oeuvre from his earliest opera Oberto to his final work, Falstaff. In writing the first edition of this classic work--which appeared to great acclaim in 1973--Julian Budden mined the vast resources of European archives to provide a groundbreaking interpretation of Verdi's work, and along the way discovered much new material, including an unpublished additional aria for I Due Foscari. Now available in a revised edition, The Operas of Verdi is now brought up to date in light of the most recent scholarship, making it more useful and entertaining than ever.
Volume 1 traces the organic growth and development of the composer's style from 1839 to 1851--from Oberto to Rigoletto--and examines each opera in detail, offering a full account of its dramatic and historical origins as well as a brief critical evaluation. More than 350 musical examples make the significance of these early operas to Verdi's developing style especially clear.
In the second volume, Budden covers those operas written during the decadence of the post-Rossini period. During this time Verdi, having exhausted the simple lyricism found in such works as Il Trovatore and La Traviata, found new life as he directly confronted the masters of the Paris opera with his Les Vêpres Siciliennes. The new scale and variety of musical thought that can be sensed in the Italian operas which followed is shown here to culminate in La Forza del Destino.
The third and final volume of the study covers the quarter century which saw grand opera on the Parisian model established throughout Italy, and the spread of cosmopolitan influences that convinced many that Italian music was losing its identity. Verdi produced his four last and greatest operas during this time--Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff--operas which helped inaugurate "versimo," in which a new, recognizably Italian idiom was realized.
These three volumes cover every aspect of Verdi's rich and varied operatic achievement. Every lover of opera in particular and music in general will want a set in their library.

Amazon.com Review
The three volumes of studies of Verdi's operas by Julian Budden are rightly classics of the genre. This is owing to their scope of information on the genesis, circumstances, variants, and specifics of the operas themselves--certainly the fullest description these works have ever been given--as well as to the wealth of surrounding information about the composer, his life, his friends, and his times. It is a measure of the excellence of Budden's achievement that this cornucopia of information is surveyed in very readable prose--readers get a picture of each work within its context. Budden's knowledge of 19th-century opera--both in Italy and in France--is wide-ranging, and he is able to place Verdi and his works in comparison with those of Donizetti, Pacini, Mercadante, and Meyerbeer. He discusses how the great operatic genius emerged from the background of early-19th-century opera and how Verdi's own early, uneven works blossomed into the glory of his later ones. Budden, thankfully, is not a hagiographer, and he recognizes Verdi's faults as well as his strengths, but few--if any--writers have managed to demonstrate how Verdi both blended in with his musical surroundings and stood out from them. These studies, with all their richness, are a good source of information about a host of lesser composers of the time. Budden includes many musical examples to highlight his writing in this, a work of scholarship of the highest order. --Patrick J. Smith

Review
'Where on earth did Verdians turn before Budden? When the first volume of his chronological study of the complete 31 operas appeared in 1973, it was already clear this could prove the standard work...With Verdi productions proliferating in the run-up to the centenary of his death in 2001, this great study grows ever more necessary.' A must for Verdi fans
By Brian Lowery
I finally ordered this book, and I love it. I wish I had got it years ago. Covers the history, the music, and story of each Verdi opera up to Rigoletto. After reading about one of the operas, you will find that you enjoy it more the next time you hear it. If you like Verdi, you should have this book in your library!

indispensable for Verdians; a major and accessible work of scholarship
By Stanley Crowe
Like another review here, this one really relates to all three volumes of Budden's traversal of Verdi's operas. I can't think of many books in which works of art (whether literature, painting, drama, or music) are as effectively contextualized as they are here. The context is historical in several senses: it is attentive to the particular political and social circumstances in which Verdi's operas were created, but it's attentive too to the "politics" of the Italian (and at times Parisian) opera world in which Verdi , Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini, and a host of minor figures belonged. We hear about managers, impresarios, singers, opera houses, and of course librettists, and Budden quotes tellingly from Verdi's ample correspondence with all these groups. We get a sense, therefore, of Verdi, not only as composer, but as businessman and collaborator, and we get a sense of his energy and personality and decisiveness. Its an attractive portrait: a touchy, principled, ambitious, and , of course, highly gifted man. But Budden gives us more: the musical context is also made clear in excellent general essays at the beginnings of the first two volumes, before Budden embarks on individual chapters on every opera. In the individual chapters, we get accounts of the genesis of the operas, plenty of information on their sources (often with ample quotation), including descriptions of how the opera plots modify the plots of the originals, and some account of the early reception and early performance history of each opera. Then there's the musical analysis itself, and the text is replete with musical examples. Budden has a fine sense of where Verdi's originality is in evidence, even in the early operas, and while these early operas get extensive treatment in their individual chapters, the "great" operas get correspondingly fuller treatment and analysis. Even if your musical knowledge is limited (as mine is), you will find Budden's three volumes fascinating and instructive -- and, as important as anything, written with clarity, grace, and humor. This is a major work of criticism and scholarship.

A Terrific Achievement
By New Yorker
I'm reviewing the first volume, but this is really about all three volumes. After a
general introduction situating Verdi in the Italian opera structure of his time, the
author present a separate chapter on each title, first giving the background of the
project and then analyzing the action scene by scene, with plenty of musical examples.
Instead of following a recording with the libretto, you can follow it using Budden's
precis, for much enlightenment on how Verdi created music drama. It's really an
amazingly detailed excursion. Had you heard about Budden's plans before he actually
started writing, you might guess that no one life is long enough to allow an author to
lay out so much detail, so much thought and insight. There are many great books. But
this one is astonishing.
