horrible, find a better book

What I as a student found lacking in this book: 1.) It has many problems, which is a good thing, but this fact is negated by its lack of a publically available solutions manual and numerous and obvious misprints. 2.) Many of the examples gloss over important points to note and I found many vague and cursory. The instructor I had used more detailed material from other textbooks. Many examples also appeared to be used as a substitute for generalized text explainations and diagrams. It also seemed rather vague on the more theroetical aspects of the material. Considering all the other Statics textbooks out there, chances would favor some of them being a lot better than this one. And taking into account the price, I would consider this book a total waste of resources. If you're a mechanical engineering or aerospace student, you'll probably need a better introduction than this if you hope to survive the more advanced courses.

Well though out for the student in mind.

As an engineering student, I found this book very appealing. Its step-by-step presentation of various topics dealing with static structures make it clear and easy to understand for a freshman engineer and can also be used for future quick-reference. Its colorful, crisp diagrams give the student a good opportunity to develop their spatial perception of 3 dimensional objects. Finally, the book's use of calculus is limited and doesn't make the subject intimidating for the first year student.

Great Engineering Mechanics Book

I used this book for my Statics and Solids classes. The book is filled with helpful illustrations and examples that demonstrate the techniques used to solve engineering problems. There are plentiful practice problems that vary greatly in approach and difficulty (of course, my professor assigned only the more difficult ones..). Compared to other engineering textbooks I have used, Engineering Mechanics by Bedford and Fowler succeeds in challenging your mind without overwhelming you, as many engineering books can do.

I bought the Earth Users Guide way back in 1994. It was at a time when I'd realised that there was much more to permaculture than making herb spirals and sheet mulch beds, and was desperately hungry to find out more. I'd borrowed Permaculture One and the Designers Manual from the library, but have to admit that as a newcomer didn't find them particularly approachable. Rosemary Morrow's book on the other hand was exactly what I was looking for, and I fondly remember hours spent pouring over its clearly written text, colour photos and the wealth of clear, simple yet beautiful diagrams and illustrations that made the book a visual treat. Drawing on her years of experience in Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and Africa, Morrow communicated the essence of permaculture ethics, principles and design with enthusiasm, translating Holmgren and Mollison's heady but rather theoretical concepts to an accessible 'here's how to do it' approach. After giving an overview of ecological concepts such as understanding landscape, soil, water and climate, the book covered practical applications of permaculture in the home and garden as well as more broadscale areas of farming, aquacultures, orchard and forest management, finally looking at 'social permaculture' strategies such as LETS and bioregionalism. Together with Graham Bell's 'Permaculture Garden', I can honestly say this is a book that changed my life... Receiving this new edition was therefore like having a visit from an old friend, being able to spend a good few hours reminiscing and once again sharing their wisdom and inspiration. And as with meeting the best of our old mates, its great to learn that the Earth Users Guide has moved on and grown. In fact its been completely revised and updated to almost twice its original size! In particular the sections on urban permaculture and community building have been expanded, and there are new sections on 'weeds', wildlife gardening, seed saving and pest management, as well as the introduction of concepts like Ecological Footprinting that were virtually unknown in the early 1990s. And best of all, there are loads more new pictures! Morrow continues to empower with her vision that permaculture possibilities are not only open to anybody whatever their circumstances or situation, but can be fun too! Terrible Representation of Permaculture

I have read quite a few different permaculture books and this was, by far, the worst one. The book never establishes a solid outline or direction and is constantly jumping from one topic to the next. Instead of explaining the principles of permaculture in such a way that gives the reader the knowledge to apply what he/she has read, the author chooses to instruct the readers to perform somewhat futile tasks. For example, the author dedicates nearly an entire chapter on how to conduct a water audit for you or your family. While a water audit can sometimes be a useful tool in the "permaculture toolbelt", it should not be the focal or starting point for every property or personal situation like the author would like you to believe.

This book contains so many politically-biased, inaccurate statements it made my head want to explode. Unfortunately, it is these kinds of publications that are holding permaculture back from gaining widespread acceptance. Permaculture can dictate politics but politics should never dictate permaculture. More government regulations (carbon taxes, etc.) are the antithesis of permaculture. This book takes the ethics of permaculture and twists them to meet a certain political goal.

It is also impossible to look any particular topic up in this book since the index is less than a full page long. This book reads like a school textbook, so to have such a small index is terrible book planning.

Please, do NOT waste your money on this book!

Gaia's Garden or Sepp Holzer's Permaculture would be FAR better choices!!

Get it; you won't regret it

This book is pretty much all you need to know to joyfully and abundantly reduce your carbon footprint and increase your food security and self sufficiency. Once the initial learning curve and setup are done, it all pretty much runs itself, so your life ends up being more Earth-friendly and easier to maintain. And, by the way, this is not just about growing a garden and having chickens; it applies to literally every area of your life from building or buying a home to your work and social life and everything in between. The book can streamline your life whether you live on a commercial farm or in a tiny apartment. If you feel you never have enough money or time, this book can help you have more of both. The principles are applicable to a small family as well as an entire community (or world).

Perfect for beginners

Everything you need to start your permaculture journey. This was the assigned textbook for a permaculture class I attended and I only wish I'd found it sooner. It was written in Australia so many references are to that zone but the information is relevant to all zones and the simple pictures drive home concepts well. If you're looking for the basics, this is a great place to begin with all of the concepts, exercises, and applicable info.

He then divides the book into parts devoted to syntactic categories, syntactic structure and argument structure, argument realization, unbounded dependencies, and clausal structure. He provides exercises, problems, and suggestions for further reading throughout the book.

Great book....ONLY if you love hosted and don't want an on-prem deployment

Been using CRM since 3.0. i swore by this series until now. The book is written primarily from the perspective of, and for the benefit of hosted version users. The book and the writer make the ignorant assumption that everyone loves everything cloud (and the latency that comes with having a key LOB platform at the other end of an Internet connection, rather than on a GB LAN), and wastes a LOT of time and pages talking about features and services that those who still prefer on-prem can't ever enjoy. This creates confusion since it sends you looking for stuff you'll never find, and creates animosity and resentment against Microsoft for not offering their on-prem customers comparable functionality. If you are drinking the MS Kool Aid that they can be trusted with your data, and you are willing to concede the performance of an on-prem deployment for the convenience of hosted, then this is a great book because it still covers a lot. But as a comitted on-prem user, I was VERY disappointed after buying the last several versions of this book.

Based on previous editions/versions of this book, I bought 12 copies of this book to give to my team and received them today.

It looks like Marc did a thorough job covering everything that CRM has to offer, and included both the technical limitations related to on premises integration which is key to our systems work.

I wouldn't recommend this book for a beginner, but then I wouldn't recommend CRM for a beginner either.

As textbooks go, its not bad...

Textbooks are inherently flawed. I do not like them. Nevertheless, they seem necessary. As textbooks go, this one is fairly good. It presents opposing viewpoints on various complex and contested issues that affect Africans and Africa. Topics range from excision (female circumcision) to economic development to the origins of corruption. It is good for giving American students, who are generally thoroughly ignorant about Africa (well what do you expect when their vision of Africa comes from Disney's "The Lion King"...), some insight into the complexity of this immense continent.

On the positive side, the "articles" or viewpoints are written by recognized experts who are able to highlight some of the major arguments for or against a position in a relatively concise manner. The book also has an introduction and historical overview that situates the "problems" it explores. I would also note that it includes with every debate a list of further resources.

On the negative side, it is "problem" focused so it tends to reinforce the already-existing stereotype prevalent in the US and the West in general that Africa is a "problem" and one that has to be resolved by outsiders. Also, although the contributors are, without question, experts in the field(s) of African studies, very few of them are Africans (I am not African and I teach African studies, but it is nice to have a bit of balance).

I would not base my entire class upon this book. I use it with one or two other texts and with a number of films (African films) in my classes. However, used in that context, it has been effective at generating discussion and debate and in getting students to understand that contemporary Africa is not what most American students think it is, that Africans do not conform to the stereotypes that the American media creates of them, and that the problems that face Africa and Africans are sufficiently complex that they cannot be quickly and easily resolved (if they could be, Africans would have resolved them).

Interesting and Insightful

Being a Nigerian I was interested in REALLY learning about the issues that infest such a beautiful country. It opened my eyes to not only the goverment problems but problems about diamond mines, and other natural resources that Africa is abundant on yet fails to regulate successfully. The book has the YES/NO views on every topic from the French colonization, to China's investment in Africa. It is an easy read for college students and even more easy to use as a guide for Argumentative papers.

I purchased this book for a college course. It was an interesting read because it gave two different opinions, accompanied by references. Was not difficult to understand...
