About the Author
Biswa Nath Datta is Professor of Mathematical Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, and Distinguished Research Professor at Northern Illinois University. He has authored more than 115 interdisciplinary research papers, the books Numerical Methods for Linear Control Systems Design and Analysis and Numerical Linear Algebra and Applications, and several associated software packages. He was elected a Fellow of IEEE in 2000, inducted an Academician of the Academy of Nonlinear Sciences in 2002, and named a recipient of a Senior Fulbright Specialist award, an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer award, and several IEEE Plaques of Honor.

A very resourceful and readable book on this subject

While there are many books on Numerical Linear Algebra at various levels, Datta's book is very resourceful and carefully prepared for classroom use. The book is very readable and the students would love it. The organization of the topics, the method of presentation, historical background at the beginning of each chapter, lucid examples, comprehensive and detailed proofs for almost all Theorems, useful MATLAB exercises for almost all the computational methods presented in the book make this book very suitable for classroom adoptation. Datta has given lots of good references (books and journal articles) at the end of each chapter, which are useful for further research on the major topics. It is a very nice and well-written book. The only suggestion that I have is to add more details on Krylov Space methods and such topics, and make this book suitable for a wider audience. I recommend this book strongly.

This book is fairly easy to read and covers the subject in a logical order. However the examples and problems are rife with errors and inconsistent nomenclature--making this a hard book to use as a text.

George R.R. Martin Interviews Bernard Cornwell

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid '90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since.

George R.R. Martin: It has long been my contention that the historical novel and the epic fantasy are sisters under the skin, that the two genres have much in common. My series owes a lot to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and the other great fantasists who came before me, but I've also read and enjoyed the work of historical novelists. Who were your own influences? Was historical fiction always your great passion? Did you ever read fantasy?

Bernard Cornwell: You're right--fantasy and historical novels are twins--and I've never been fond of the label 'fantasy' which is too broad a brush and has a fey quality. It seems to me you write historical novels in an invented world which is grounded in historical reality (if the books are set in the future then 'fantasy' magically becomes sci-fi). So I've been influenced by all three: fantasy, sci-fi and historical novels, though the largest influence has to be C.S. Forester's Hornblower books.

Martin: A familiar theme in a lot of epic fantasy is the conflict between good and evil. The villains are often Dark Lords of various ilks, with demonic henchmen and hordes of twisted, malformed underlings clad in black. The heroes are noble, brave, chaste, and very fair to look upon. Yes, Tolkien made something grand and glorious from that, but in the hands of lesser writers, well ... let's just say that sort of fantasy has lost its interest for me. It is the grey characters who interest me the most. Those are the sort I prefer to write about... and read about. It seems to me that you share that affinity. What is it about flawed characters that makes them more interesting than conventional heroes?

Cornwell: Maybe all our heroes are reflections of ourselves? I'm not claiming to be Richard Sharpe (God forbid), but I'm sure parts of my personality leaked into him (he's very grumpy in the morning). And perhaps flawed characters are more interesting because they are forced to make a choice… a conventionally good character will always do the moral, right thing. Boring. Sharpe often does the right thing, but usually for the wrong reasons, and that's much more interesting!

Martin: When Tolkien began writing The Lord of the Rings, it was intended as a sequel to The Hobbit. "The tale grew in the telling," he said later, when LOTR had grown into the trilogy we know today. That's a line I have often had occasion to quote over the years, as my own Song of Ice and Fire swelled from the three books I had originally sold to the seven books (five published, two more to write) I'm now producing. Much of your own work has taken the form of multi-part series. Are your tales too 'growing in the telling,' or do you know how long your journeys will take before you set out? Did you know how many books Uhtred's story would require, when you first sat down to write about him?

Cornwell: No idea! I don't even know what will happen in the next chapter, let alone the next book, and have no idea how many books there might be in a series. E.L. Doctorow said something I like which is that writing a novel is a bit like driving down an unfamiliar country road at night and you can only see as far ahead as your somewhat feeble headlamps show. I write into the darkness. I guess the joy of reading a book is to find out what happens, and for me that's the joy of writing one too!

Great practice for a nearly-fluent French speaker.

I loved this book! I'd asked for it for my birthday because I'd already seen the movies and wanted to read the books, but hoped that reading them in French would be a nice challenge for myself, and that the story would keep me engaged. I was right. Being a story written for teens, the prose was simple enough that I could read it at a good pace, but still learned a ton of new vocabulary. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for some fun reading.
I'm a high-school French teacher, and I enjoyed it so much that I'm thinking of incorporating it into a French 4 curriculum the next time I have the chance to teach one. (Of course it's not entirely ideal for that since these are English idioms translated into French, but if your goal is to get the students engaged in a book that they can understand, while building their vocabulary, this would certainly do it.) Can't wait to get the second and third books.

20 Years Later

Two decades ago, while I was enduring the aftermath of a divorce, an acquaintance "tricked" me into reading this book. (That's an interesting story, but for another time.)

I had heard it said that unless we understand why we married our first spouse, we were almost certainly doomed to remarry the "same person". That I did NOT want to do. So, in order to avoid that dreadful prospect, I began reading this book.

At first I was appalled at Hendrix's explanation of why I had chosen my first wife. In fact, I was so offended (and frightened) by what he said, that I almost threw away the book. However, I was just desperate enough to keep reading. And, I am certainly thankful I did. By the end of the book, I was convinced Hendrix was absolutely right in his explanation of love (as a mental process) and why we choose whom we choose.

Twenty years later, I can testify that I am still indebted to this book. It has helped me avoid a number of HORRIBLE mistakes that I was initially inclined to make.

I would also advise anyone who will listen to read this book. Read it as if you're a single person, even if you're married. Read it if you want to understand why you make the decisions you make. Read it if you want to avoid multiple failures in relationships and all sorts of life-changing decisions.

As Solomon wrote: "The mind of the wise seeks knowledge. But the mouth of the fool feeds on folly." (Proverbs 15.14) This book might just be the first meal of wisdom you need.

A life and relationship changing book. How to help each other heal, instead of hurt.

This excellent book is by far one of THE most enlightening guides on relationships for couples. I was blown away when I listened to it on CD three years ago, being in between relationships. And now, reading it while actually in a relationship is the BEST gift I have given to myself and my partner. ALL relationships are headed in this direction and doomed to fail if one or both people are not conscious of the unconscious, natural process of attraction described in this book. The skills of awareness, and how to communicate, and how to put into ACTION the healing, relating process are invaluable. The best part is that this 20th anniversary edition is the most up to date, improved version that is supported by actual stories of success. At the very least, this book is also an excellent tool to raise anyone's level of consciousness about any type of relationship attraction or interaction. If all the people on the planet were aware of these principles, we could relate to each other in a healing way, instead of hurting each other. A MUST READ. Yet, if you are able to listen while driving long distances or working around the house, the CDs are also excellent.

The upside to this book is that it should get couples to discuss their issues openly. The downside is that Hendrix has his narrow philosophy about where all marriage problems come from, and then conveniently interprets every relational problem within this philosophy. Hendrix's main belief is that we are all looking for partners that will give us what we did not receive from our childhood primary caregivers. Though this may be true in certain cases, to make this the only source of issues in relationships is very simplistic. Relationships are complicated. Simple answers are seldom appropriate. However, this book will get you to think about your relationship and hopefully help you to get to the true root of your relational issues.
