A 2012 Michael L. Printz Honor Book

Charlie Bucktin, a bookish thirteen year old, is startled one summer night by an urgent knock on his bedroom window. His visitor is Jasper Jones, an outcast in their small mining town, and he has come to ask for Charlie's help. Terribly afraid but desperate to impress, Charlie follows him into the night.

Jasper takes him to his secret glade, where Charlie witnesses Jasper's horrible discovery. With his secret like a brick in his belly, Charlie is pushed and pulled by a town closing in on itself in fear and suspicion. He locks horns with his tempestuous mother, falls nervously in love, and battles to keep a lid on his zealous best friend. In the simmering summer where everything changes, Charlie learns why the truth of things is so hard to know, and even harder to hold in his heart.

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-A rap on the window awakens 13-year-old Charlie Bucktin. He's startled to find Jasper Jones, the bad boy of his small Australian town, frantic and in need of his help. Charlie follows Jasper into the night and is led to the battered body of Laura Wishart, hanging from the noose of a eucalyptus tree. Jasper is desperate to cut Laura down as the rope around her neck belongs to him. Convinced of Jasper's innocence, Charlie helps submerge Laura's body in a river and the boys vow to find Laura's killer. Set in the 1960s during the Vietnam War, Craig Silvey's novel (Knopf, 2011) perfectly captures the time period. Charlie's small town reacts with fear at Laura's disappearance and the bigotry simmering just below the surface of the town erupts into violence. Matt Cowlrick gives each character a unique voice and his pacing is impeccable. Strong language and mature content make this appropriate for older teens.-Tricia Melgaard, formerly Broken Arrow Public Schools, Tulsa, OKα(c) Copyright 2011. Review
Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, March 15, 2011:
"The author’s keen ear for dialogue is evident in the humorous verbal sparring between Charlie and Jeffrey, typical of smart 13-year-old boys...A richly rewarding exploration of truth and lies by a masterful storyteller."

Starred Review, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, April 2011:
"Silvey’s sure-footed, evocative prose, intelligent humor, and careful plot structuring may well ensure this Aussie import lasting status."

Starred Review, The Horn Book Magazine, May/June 2011:
"The mood and atmosphere of the 1960s small-town Australian setting is perfectly realized—suspenseful, menacing, and claustrophobic—with issues of race and class boiling just below the surface."

Starred Review, School Library Journal, June 2011:
"Silvey is a master of wit and words, spinning a coming-of-age tale told through the mind of a young Holden Caulfield."

Multi-Layered Story
By PDXbibliophile
Jasper Jones is an intense read on several levels. Young protagonist, Charlie, often makes references to his latest favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird, and there many similarities in these two novels. Jasper Jones is set in 1960's small rural town Australia. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, Charlie's town is being poisoned by poverty, prejudice, gossip, alcoholism and despair. Charlie ends up in the center of the town's unraveling when he promises his classmate, Jasper, he will keep a horrible secret about something Jasper has discovered - a secret that is the inciting event for dragging all of the town's deplorable secrets out in the open. Charlie is just trying to do the right thing, but how can it be right, if it is causing so many negative consequences? The story has a gripping opening that leads the reader to believe Jasper Jones is a mystery, and it is, partly.
"And I see it. And everything changes. I'm screaming, but they are muffled screams. I can't breathe in. I feel like I'm underwater. Deaf and drowning..."
"We can't tell anybody Charlie. We have to find out who did this."
The first thing readers will think is, how are two young teens going to solve such a huge mystery? The mystery doesn't crop up again for 200 pages. Most of the story focuses on Charlie trying to survive his decision to keep the secret, and his trying to understand what is happening to all of these people he has known all of his life. But when the Charlie and Jasper finally step up to solve the mystery, it brings surprise twists and surprise ending. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, Jasper Jones is foremost a coming of age story. Also like To Kill A Mockingbird, it does not have a happily ever after ending, but it does have a realistic and satisfying ending.

An instant classic
By D Putri
It took me a while to pick up this book as I must have been put off by the publisher hype that calls Jasper Jones 'the Australian "To Kill of a Mockingbird". But once I got started on it, I could not put it down.

The opening hooked me in instantly. How could it not? The book, set in summer 1965 in the regional mining town of Corrigan, opens with bookish teen Charles Bucktin led into the bush by indigenous boy and local troublemaker Jasper Jones, only to discover Laura Wishart, a girl from school, hanging dead from a tree.

The little world of Corrigan set the perfect stage to depict the racial prejudice imposed on Jasper Jones. A prejudice that would have seen someone like Jasper arrested and convicted without a fair trial, no matter how far from truth the charges are. That is why Charles and Jasper had to take matters in their own hand. They had to find the killer before the body is found.

Despite of the gut wrenching opening, to my delight, Jasper Jones is not a detective story. It is a classic coming age story, where Charles Bucktin has his eyes opened to the realities of his small town existence - racism, domestic abuse, small town parochialism and downright ignorance.

For instance, very much like 1930s America, racism was at its peak in 1960s Australia. In this story, racially motivated hatred and action were widely tolerated. Charles, who narrates the tale, also witnesses racially motivated hatred and violence directed towards best friend, Jeffrey Lu, the son of a Vietnamese migrant. Even though Jeffrey is a brilliant kid with the wittiest comebacks, he is reduced to a mute in the face of bullying.

The author delivers the story without the doom and gloom that would usually accompany such subject matter. In fact, it almost seems like Jasper Jones, the book, is not taking itself too seriously. There is lightheartedness and childish wit in tragedy. Charles Bucktin provided a dose wisdom that goes beyond his age yet within character as gis teenage impulses still dominate the storytelling.

Aside of Jeffrey, Charles also discovers an unexpected ally in Laura's sister Eliza. In fact, her presence in his life gradually blossoms info a romantic relationship. This plagues him secretly as he harbours the terrible secret of Laura's disappearance. Meanwhile the town descends into paranoia and erupts in frantic search efforts at the slightest stir as Laura's whereabouts remains a mystery.

The dialogues between the young characters were my favourite parts of the book. Random banter about how stripes got onto toothpastes and whether one would choose to wear a hat made of live spiders or would rather have a hand full of penises instead were absolutely authentic, funny and heartwarming. It also evoked a sense of nostalgia and even more so, as it is filled with pop culture references of days gone by like Audrey Hepburn movies.

In sum, 'Jasper Jones' is a superb literary work that deserves to be listed as an Australian classic. Highly recommended.

Reminds me of "DeGrassi"
By Dienne
In my college days, we used to gather in the lounge in the late afternoons on weekdays eagerly awaiting the next episode of "DeGrassi Junior High" (which became "DeGrassi High" my second year). It seemed like every possible calamity and scandal struck those poor kids, so much so that it became the House sport to guess the next Big Event - who would get pregnant, who was using drugs, whose parents would split, who'd get what disease, etc. It was hardly realistic, but then, it wasn't really meant to be - it was an after-school special designed to get kids talking about important topics (and to entertain bored college students).

This book reminded me a lot of that old show, and, in fact, I had a few "DeGrassi moments" when some new explosive secret would burst open. This book has it all. Jasper Jones is basically an abandoned street waif. His mother died in an accident when he was little and his father's been a raging drunk ever since. He's been outcast by the townsfolk who blame him for every unexplained mishap and tragedy. And to top it off, what he finds in the little clearing he uses as his home away from home threatens his very existence in the small mining town of Corrigan, Australia (which could just as easily be any town in America, minus the Australian slang).

Charlie Bucktin is a nerdy kid, unblessed with athletic prowess in a town where sports are currency. His tyrannical mother dominates his existence and there's not support to be had from his mild-mannered father. His parents' already rocky marriage is about to be blown apart by one more of Corrigan's many toxic secrets.

Charlie's best friend Jeffery Lu and his family are refugees from Vietnam who are treated like the town's social project - pitied and tolerated, but only so long as they don't cause trouble. And trouble could be something as simple as his father having a job when other Corrigan men are out of work. But at least they're not dying in Vietnam like his mother's family. Undersized Jeffrey is tormented mercilessly by the athletic boys, but he hardly seems to notice as he cheerfully comes back for more, all in the hopes of getting to play cricket.

And Eliza Wishart, the quiet, aloof girl Charlie secretly has his hopes set on, has troubles of her own. Her sister is "missing" and Eliza knows more than she's letting on. Meanwhile, her father, town president and pillar of the community, has some secrets of his own.

When Laura Wishart goes "missing", these four characters and their families are drawn into a heaving swirl of drama that will ultimately both reveal and further bury the ugly secrets that have festered in the town for so long. While there is a certain happy resolution to the story, basically life in Corrigan will go on as before with the same fetid drama continuing to play out.

I agree with reviewers who say that this is not really a plot-focused book. White a lot seems to happen, and often dramatically, few events seem to move the plot along. The book opens as a mystery, but we really make little progress solving that mystery, instead getting sidetracked by the relationships among the characters and the drama of their ordinary lives. When the mystery is solved, it's all at once, as told by one character is a rather anti-climactic sort of way. The plot turns, such as they are, are either too predictable or too left field. The relationship between Jasper and "Mad Jack" Lionel is obvious from the start, where as Charlie's climactic encounter with his mother was one of my "oh come on" DeGrassi moments.

I'm not even so sure I agree that the characters are all that well done (although I do agree the books is heavily character focused). Certain aspects are done really well. The bantering relationship between Charlie and Jeffrey was fresh, genuine and very clever (and spot on with the Superman vs. Batman debated). Also, the budding, uneasy relationship between Charlie and Jasper felt pretty genuine and believable. But other aspects didn't seem so believable. Charlie's mother, for instance, is just unexplainably off-the-wall hostile. yes, we understand that she's frustrated living in Corrigan, and yes, we understand she's been spoiled by her rich, doting family in the city. But it doesn't quite gel into a believable portrait of a woman who could be that unfeeling and cruel to her own son.

Even Charlie doesn't seem to add up, or, at least his role in the story doesn't. Of all the kids/people in Corrigan, Charlie was the only one that Jasper felt he could turn to? Why? Why not someone older and wiser? What was it about Charlie that drew him, and how did he even really know Charlie? And once Charlie was involved, what was his role? I kept expecting Charlie to make a difference, even a small one. He could have, for instance, stood up for Jasper, or even Jeffrey, even in a small way. Charlie spends the book worrying about doing the "right" thing, but then he never really does much of anything. Eliza and Jasper to the work of the story, while Charlie just seems like a frame through which to view everything.

Overall, this book is enjoyable enough if you're simply looking for a light read (and especially if you're a cricket fan), but it sours a little upon closer reflection. There are a few other holes that I haven't touched on because it's hard to say much without giving too much away. The book does do an admirable job of exploring the dark secrets that often lurk beneath the "too nice" life of the most "respectable" members of society. The target audience will probably appreciate that aspect, as they're probably become aware of it in their own lives. Jasper, Charlie, Jeffrey, and, to a lesser extent, Eliza are all engaging characters which helps make it a decent read. I'd say this book is a good effort from a relatively new author with some good potential, but I'd look for more from future books.

Warmed over yesterday's veggie soup
By P. William Bane
Regret buying this since I purchased earlier versions and the author adds/changes very little as his versions change.

Hint to readers, for something with much greater "content" and usefulness (after you know what the buttons do), go to the books by Dan Margullis, which exceed the value of the top 5 books "About Photoshop".

Mr. Evening might, with permission, try some added value in his next editon's based on Mr. Margullis' advanced understanding. I will buy any book at almost any price that gave more instructions/insights into Mr. Margullis' insights and practices.

Lila an Inquiry Into Morals, by Robert M Pirsig

A novel featuring Phaedrus, the mythical alter ego of Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". It is the story of a clash of opposites - a catastrophic-comic encounter between the philosophizing, introspective Phaedrus and the outgoing, sexually aggressive Lila.

From Publishers Weekly
Seventeen years after the publication of his still-popular road story/philosophical meditation, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance , Pirsig offers another lengthy and absorbing investigation of how we can live well and rightly. Phaedrus, the one-named narrator "who had written a whole book on values," is sailing down the Hudson River when he meets Lila Blewitt, an unapologetically sexual, psychologically unstable woman whom a mutual friend warns him against. But Phaedrus is drawn to her physically and interested in her intellectually, finding her "a culture of one" in whom he discerns an unexpected "Quality." Sailing with him to Manhattan, where her mental state deteriorates further, Lila prompts Phaedrus to explore conflicts of values like those between Native Americans and Europeans or between the insane and the normal. Finally, after years of struggling, he formulates his "Metaphysics of Quality" which offers a system of understanding--and evaluating--actions according to a hierarchy of four evolutionary realms (natural, biological, social and intellectual). Though Lila's fate is left unresolved, Pirsig's wide-ranging philosophical explorations will provoke and engage readers.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Pirsig's newest work continues in the same philosophical vein as his earlier books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ( LJ 10/15/74) and Guide book to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" ( LJ 10/15/90). Lila is a novel-cum-philosophical tome that wrestles with the issues and problems of life in the Nineties. Phaedrus, the principle character, is a writer grappling with his latest treatise, the "metaphysics of Quality." Lila, his aging and desperate wharf-bar pickup, provides the right amount of antagonism and criticism to hone his ruminations of life and civilization to something understandable and real. Pirsig has some fairly interesting ideas, but his evasiveness in defining his version of "quality" early on may lose some readers. His transition from the novel format to the philosophy lesson is uneven and distracting at times. However, his observations lead to some surprising revelations. Readers familiar with his earlier work will want this. Recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
Pirsig's absorbing second novel, appearing nearly two decades after Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, continues where his former work left off--in an exploration of the Metaphysics of Quality set against a journey by sailboat to the Atlantic Ocean. Phaedrus, peripatetic author of a successful book about motorcycles, is once again on the road in this philosophical odyssey--or rather on the Hudson River, as he makes his way toward the Atlantic and, eventually, Florida. His initial goal was to isolate himself sufficiently to complete his second novel, which currently consists of hundreds of notes that he regularly reorganizes and stores in rusty card-catalogue drawers. But isolation is the last thing a sailboat captain experiences on the water, Phaedrus discovers, and it's just as well, because his encounters with Lila (an aging former prostitute), Richard (her childhood friend), and assorted others along his journey inspire even more exciting concepts for his philosophical book. Chief among these is the concept of ``quality'' or value, which Phaedrus posits as the basic organizing principle of the universe. Shifting away from the Western world's reliance on subject-object and cause-and- effect relationships, Phaedrus suggests that everything is instead an expression of more or less quality, and that evolution moves not toward survival of the fittest but toward higher forms of value. While Phaedrus teases a ``scientifically-based'' morality out of this concept (lower forms of quality, such as individual humans, should be sacrificed if necessary in favor of higher forms, including society and, even higher, ideas), Lila begins exhibiting psychotic behavior and Richard becomes increasingly irritated with Phaedrus' abstract, self-absorbed pose. Readers may occasionally feel the same irritation--scenes that advance the plot seem carelessly scribbled in the author's hurry to get back to his theory--but as ever Pirsig's provocative ideas far outweigh such drawbacks. Engrossingly, utterly Pirsig--fans will not be disappointed. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Lackluster Lila
By BlasterMaster
"Lila" was a disappointment, following Pirsig's monumental success with "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (ZAMM). We sadly
recall how his son was murdered in San Francisco, at the end of the motorcycle trip they took together in ZAMM, forever leaving unresolved the issues that came between a father and a son. Pirsig was so disillusioned with the pervasive violence in American society, he relocated abroad and lives on a boat with his wife in Europe. This is the background for "Lila" and explains why it is such a disappointment: it was written by a man still reeling with grief and suffused with anger at the senseless death of his son.

Gone is the introspection and soul searching of ZAMM, the attention to mechanical detail and the zen of solving problems using quality. "Lila", like ZAMM, also describes a journey but it is one of personal pain and grief, taking place on water rather than asphalt. But writing from a source of grief limits Pirsig's expression and insight as his energy is directed towards emotional healing, to over coming the numbness and detachment that follows the loss of a loved one, especially a child.

I look forward to his next literary effort when both time and physical distance has allowed him to recover and knit together his creative and emotional components, allowing him to regain the perspective that thrust Pirsig among the ranks of uniquely American literary "giants" like Steinbeck and Kerouac.

A pretty spectacular "failure"
By wEEpstah
Lila is the second of Robert Pirsig's books and was widely considered a disappointment when it came out. Part of the problem with this is that is lacks the character driven narrative of father and son the weaves throughout Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It also lacks a satisfactory ending to the story compared to Zen - and the characters, from Phaedrus and Lila all the way down are far less likeable. In many ways, Lila was a story - as a novel - that could never live up to the impact that ZAAMM has had on so many people. It's much colder and so much more analytical.

Having said that, Lila should be approached from a different perspective. It was never meant to be a ZAAMM kind of story and is not a novel that is going to provide a satisfactory summing up. But if you take the time to read and re-read it, and if you agree with Pirsig's philosophical theories...it becomes quite compelling. It provides a framework for better understanding the role that "Quality" - which is not definable via language - can play in a world dominated by scientific reason.

If you enjoyed Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but were disappointed with Lila, I encourage you to give this enquiry another chance.

A jewel well hidden
By Jack S Rauh
Only a few times in a lifetime does one find a book that actually means something. In his two novelosophies, he has completely and forever altered the fundamental assertions of science, by showing how flawed the scientific method is. He has undercut 125 years of anthropology by clearly demonstrating that the refusal to allow value judgements even when coming from THAT culture's value system is nonsense. The fact that the metaphysics of value would have been our value system except for an accident of history in ancient Greece is very well detailed.

Don't read my junk, but do go read BOTH of Robert Pirsig's books.

CATIA Core Tools: Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application
By J P Villforth
As a new user of CATIA I have been looking for a book that wasn't just a bunch of tutorials. I wanted a book that told me how to use the program and the basis for the commands and command structure. It turns out that this is the book. Based upon my experience you can use this book to learn how to draw without all of the tutorials that are out there in so many other books. In addition, this book includes a history of the development of the software giving a much better view of the markets it serves and can serve. Some of the more advanced applications, such as manufacturing design, are not covered in this book but for the vast majority of users I think this is the kind of book you could use.
I got the Kindle version but I probably should have gotten the print version. Some of the figures in the Kindle version are not very clear and if you change (increase) the text size the figures do not get larger.

Good reference for necessary functions in CATIA
By Melchizedek
As the title indicates, this book explains most frequently used functions and interface in CATIA. If you are using CATIA and need an immediate reference book, this book may be a good place for look-up.

Sadly, book does not provide any tutorial or practice, which was my original intention of purchase. However, in a long run, this book may be more valuable than any other CATIA practice book out there.

After Buddhism: Rethinking the Dharma for a Secular Age, by Stephen Batchelor

A renowned Buddhist teacher’s magnum opus, based on his fresh reading of the tradition’s earliest texts

Some twenty-five centuries after the Buddha started teaching, his message continues to inspire people across the globe, including those living in predominantly secular societies. What does it mean to adapt religious practices to secular contexts?

Stephen Batchelor, an internationally known author and teacher, is committed to a secularized version of the Buddha’s teachings. The time has come, he feels, to articulate a coherent ethical, contemplative, and philosophical vision of Buddhism for our age. After Buddhism, the culmination of four decades of study and practice in the Tibetan, Zen, and Theravada traditions, is his attempt to set the record straight about who the Buddha was and what he was trying to teach. Combining critical readings of the earliest canonical texts with narrative accounts of five members of the Buddha’s inner circle, Batchelor depicts the Buddha as a pragmatic ethicist rather than a dogmatic metaphysician. He envisions Buddhism as a constantly evolving culture of awakening whose long survival is due to its capacity to reinvent itself and interact creatively with each society it encounters.

This original and provocative book presents a new framework for understanding the remarkable spread of Buddhism in today’s globalized world. It also reminds us of what was so startling about the Buddha’s vision of human flourishing.

Review
“A serious, secular reexamination of Buddhist ethics that acknowledges religiosity. . . . Highly intelligent, rigorous, and absorbing.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review (Publishers Weekly)

"Brilliant, illuminating, and thought provoking, After Buddhism deserves the ultimate compliment for a work of this kind: it is useful. In probing the ancient scriptures in search of a Buddha we can relate to, Batchelor makes his dharma come thrillingly alive. A masterful achievement."—Mark Epstein, MD, author of Thoughts without a Thinker  (Mark Epstein)

“In this remarkable book, Stephen Batchelor transcends Buddhist dogma to surface a vision of the dharma that goes right to the heart of our contemporary global culture. Through diligent scholarship and years of practice, the author sheds new and revelatory light on the dharma. This is a must-read for all students of Buddhism.”—Joan Halifax, PhD, Abbot, Upaya Zen Center (Joan Halifax)

“With exemplary lucidity, Stephen Batchelor demonstrates the relevance of an ancient thought and practice in our own era. There is much in it that illuminates and clarifies—for those acquainted with Buddhism as well as those coming to it for the first time.”—Pankaj Mishra  (Pankaj Mishra)

“Drawing on insights gleaned during decades of intensive practice, study, and writing, Batchelor’s essays demonstrate conclusively how the ancient texts of Buddhism speak directly to the needs of contemporary people living active, engaged lives in the world.”—Robert E. Buswell, Jr., University of California, Los Angeles
(Robert E. Buswell, Jr.)

“Stephen Batchelor is perhaps the finest and wisest guide in the world today to the complicated path that is combining Buddhism with humanism. For those of us who struggle with modern problems that cannot be solved by religion alone, this book will help if we are wondering what to do ‘after Buddhism.’”—Greg M. Epstein, author of Good without God

(Greg M. Epstein)

“An audacious disquisition on Buddhism, universal dharma, reality, and suffering for the 21st century. Batchelor posits that for the deep wisdom of Buddhism to serve humanity fully in our time, it may have to transcend itself.”—Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Full Catastrophe Living and Coming to Our Senses (Jon Kabat-Zinn)

From the Author
What are you trying to achieve in this book?

After Buddhism is the culmination of forty years of thinking about and practicing the dharma as a modern Westerner. I pull together a number of threads that I have explored in earlier writings, such as Buddhism without Beliefs. In all of my writings I address the question of how the teachings of this ancient Asian religion might speak to the condition of our secular age. This new work is an attempt to recover what was truly original about the Buddha's vision and to acquire a better understanding of the man himself. Recent scholarship affords us both a clearer picture of the historical world in which Gotama lived and more critical insight into the earliest discourses. Together, these allow the possibility of rethinking the dharma from the ground up.

Who have you written this book for?

With the widespread adoption of mindfulness, more and more people find themselves practicing a form of meditation that is rooted in the Buddhist tradition. I hope this book might do for Buddhist ethics and philosophy what the mindfulness movement has done for Buddhist meditation: provide a framework of values and ideas that have been stripped of their religious and metaphysical associations to reveal a practical way of life that is available to all—which might help us deal with some of the urgent questions we face as a human community in the twenty-first century.

About the Author

Passionate exposition of a secular dharma
By sudofo
If you are reading reviews of this book to determine whether it's worth your time, my answer is yes: I think most readers with an interest in the dharma, except perhaps those unshakably committed to traditional Buddhist dogmas on karma and reincarnation, will find much value here. This is an intelligent, serious, and engaging work whose ideas the author likely pondered and refined over a period of years, a learned but vibrant formulation of a secular dharma that hones in on tasks we can undertake to live compassionately and authentically. At the same time, this secular dharma dispenses with metaphysical and ontological claims that have scant bearing on liberating ourselves from the prison of reactivity. Someone who is drowning has little use for a lesson on the chemistry of water. What is needed is a teaching on how to breathe in and out of the water, and how to move and thrive in a dynamic seascape of ever-shifting currents, not a discourse on covalent and hydrogen bonds or molecular orbital theory.

The book is organized into eleven chapters that alternate in shiplap fashion, an expository chapter on the dharma followed by a chapter on an individual associated with the Buddha. The latter are helpful in providing a historical context of the Buddha's life and times. In all, five characters are profiled: Mahanama, a cousin of Buddha and a governor of Sakiya; Pasenadi, king of Kosala; Sunakkhatta, a Judas Iscariot figure; Jivaka, a physician; and Ananda, the Buddha's attendant.

Batchelor's approach to the surviving Buddhist corpus borrows from Biblical textual criticism, attempting to suss out from the massive Pali canon parts that may be attributed to early Buddhist tradition and even the historical Buddha himself, hereafter referred to as Gotama. Batchelor declares in the first chapter: "My starting point in dealing with dogmatic statements is to bracket off anything attributed to Gotama that could just as well have been said by another wanderer, Jain monk, or brahmin priest of the same period." That is, utterances inconsistent with Indic beliefs prevalent during that period are more likely to be authentic, to not have been emended by a later hand. Batchelor continues, "The bracketing off of such beliefs does not, in my opinion, result in a fragmentary and emasculated dharma. Instead, the result is what appears to be an entirely adequate ethical, contemplative, and philosophical framework for leading a flourishing life in this (italics) world."

Gotama, as described by Batchelor, stresses the undertaking of existential tasks rather than cerebral, speculative, and abstract elaborations on metaphysics or even universal ethics. More on the latter shortly. Leaning on Pali philologist K.R. Norman's observations on the semantic oddity involving the use of "ariya-saccam" or "noble truth" in Gotama's first alleged discourse, Batchelor recasts the four noble truths as the four tasks instead. In other words, he asks us to lift our gaze from the metaphysics of the Truths of the existence, origin, and cessation of suffering, and instead reframe them as four tasks we can undertake to negotiate both an unpredictable world that is often traumatizing as well as our reactivity to it. As an experienced craftsman deploys an array of skills in his trade, so does a wise person skillfully practice the four tasks to flourish in this world. In Batchelor's reformulation of the four noble truths, they become the following tasks: 1) Embrace [the totality of] life; 2) Let go of what[ever reactivity that] arises; 3) See its ceasing; 4) Act!

The foundation for performing the four tasks is the two-fold ground of causality and nirvana. Causality: this is so because that is so. Knowing that this leads to that enables us to follow the path toward liberation. Likewise, when you see that letting go of reactivity opens a space for a peace that is unmolested by burning impulses, when you have tasted this nirvana in which flames of impulse are extinguished, if only temporarily, it is possible to enter the stream and begin swimming toward liberation. To enter this stream, one must have courage to see past the shaky grounds on which we often rest our identity, whether they are nationality, ethnicity, gender, career, educational background, or favorite sports team. The grounds of causality and nirvana are more elusive yet offer a much surer footing for a sane and fulfilling life.

What kind of a person was the historical Gotama who emerges from the suttas and vinayas? Stripped of the supernatural and dogmatic elements that Batchelor deems later accretions influenced by Indic traditions, the Gotama we see is foremost a pragmatist. Attentive to the specifics of a situation, he abandons claims to ultimate truths or universal ethics. He says, “Of that which the wise in the world agree upon as not existing, I too say that it does not exist. And of that which the wise in the world agree upon as existing, I too say that it exists." It seems that Gotama did not toss and turn at night agonizing over metaphysical questions! Gotama's ethics, as well, are guided by core values but eschew absolutism. For the monastic community, Gotama allowed for the revocation of minor rules after his passing, and left it up to the mendicants themselves to fashion out what that means. Of philosophy, ethics, and jurisprudence that seek to hammer out universally applicable principles, Gotama would probably say that they lazily elide over the all-important contextual details that guide us toward the most wise and loving course of action for a given situation. Nor is Gotama a detached ascetic. He regularly interacts with the outside world, and springs to action where there is a need. In this book we see him negotiating delicate political terrains. We also see him as a healer. Upon discovering a dysentery-stricken mendicant who lay in his own excrement, neglected by his fellow mendicants, Gotama cleans off the fecal waste and bathes him, after which he scolds the sick man's cohorts: "If you do not tend to each other, then who is there who will tend to you? Whoever would tend to me, he should tend to the sick." Gotama, as we glimpse him in these anecdotes, is compassionate, practical, and engaged.

In the closing chapter, A Culture of Awakening, Batchelor champions a dharma that speaks urgently to the needs of our times. The project Gotama envisioned was like rebuilding upon the ruins of a newly discovered ancient city. Here, informed by the freedom of nirvana, individuals come together to build a culture in which humans can truly flourish. Realizing this core vision does not, Batchelor argues, require an unquestioning belief in doctrines such as karma and reincarnation. He asks, in a secular western civilization without long traditions in which reincarnation was taken as a given, in which scientific narratives have overtaken religious ones, does belief in reincarnation help us accomplish the four tasks? Batchelor concludes the book with his Ten Theses of Secular Dharma, most of whose credos have been reflected in this review, but which also espouses sanghas, or spiritual communities, without hierarchies.

While I cannot judge the quality of Batchelor's Pali scholarship, the book seemed to be densely woven with learned and carefully nuanced arguments. I found the author an able and sensitive reader, and many times in the book I was surprised by how much information he was able to extract from seemingly insignificant Pali fragments. Batchelor's conjectures and conclusions regarding the texts are necessarily speculative, but I believe they are informed and intelligent. His textual approach to arrive at the historical Gotama is a welcome one, and in my opinion, badly needed in Buddhist studies. I also believe that his vision of a secular dharma is sensible and healthy. Buddhism has survived across centuries and continents because it was able to adapt to the needs of its practitioners, though its core teachings remained intact. Batchelor is wise to ask what kind of dharma follows after Buddhism in a western culture in which the idea of mindfulness has spread like wildfire, but one that is unlikely to embrace the idea of reincarnation in literal rather than metaphorical terms. Additionally, I found the portraits of Gotama and assorted characters in this book vivid and compelling. Here we see these historical people fleshed out, with their ideologies, allegiances, temperaments, and limitations. We gasp in horror as Gotama is helpless to stop the genocidal onslaught of his kinsmen by a vengeful king. We witness a monk of senior position, disappointed in Gotama's lack of supernatural abilities, turn traitorous and furiously denounce his former teacher. In the chapter on Ananda, we sympathize with Gotama's attendant as he is humiliated and marginalized in the power struggle that ensues Gotama's death.

I do disagree with Batchelor on a few counts, most notably on the meaning of Gotama's awakening. I'll discuss only the latter here. Was Gotama's awakening the complete and eternal eradication of the impulses of greed, hatred, and delusion? Clearly not, as the Pali canon describes his multiple encounters with Mara, the personified metaphor of these forces, even after his enlightenment. Batchelor appears resigned to the impossibility of a lasting nirvana: "The problem with the three fires of greed, hatred, and confusion does not lie in their being hot but in the havoc they cause when they get out of control. ... The parable of the snake might suggest that these fires are not to be extinguished but regulated. Since emotions appear to be rooted deep in our limbic system as the legacy of biological evolution, regulation might be all that is possible and feasible." For Batchelor, then, nirvanic freedom is not something to work toward, but available in each moment we choose to disentangle ourselves from reactivity. If progress is made, it is by habituation.

My own experiences have led me to a different take. While I agree with Batchelor that we are inescapably subject to features of our mammalian physiology, I do not believe that nirvana is something merely glimpsed through practice, a momentary peace that flits like a butterfly in and out of our lives. Traumas we've experienced dissociate us physically from our bodies and temporally, and consequently 1) we lack full awareness of the felt sense of living in our bodies, and 2) our thoughts constantly stray from the present, either wandering toward fantasies or fears regarding the future, or dwelling upon glories, regrets, or injuries of the past. Whatever evolutionary instincts we are born with for the sake of self-preservation, trauma adds to the fuel of Mara's fire. In my opinion, Gotama's instruction on mindfulness of the breath is a prescription for the undoing, the healing, of the forces of trauma, to bring us back into our bodies in this moment. I believe that creating and sustaining this internal milieu opened up the space for the healing of the traumas of Gotama's past until there was no more to be undone. I say this based on my ongoing experience with the healing of traumas. A practice of meditation on and off the cushion has been the foundation allowing me to slowly process the traumas of my past, and little by little, I find that I am becoming less reactive. My days tend to be more present, I feel more connected to my body, and compassion flows more naturally. Even in emotionally volatile moments, it is becoming easier to slip back into the sublimity of the present moment. In short the fires of greed, anger, and confusion now burn less avidly in my interior landscape than they did a year ago, and much less so than they did, say, three years ago. Given my personal trajectory, I can only extrapolate that there must be an eventual end to the flames of trauma, at which point the limbic system may still stir and rattle, but with considerably attenuated intensity. This is my understanding of, and partial experience with, nirvana.

Finally, for those who might be interested, recordings of many of Batchelor's talks are freely available on the dharma seed website. I have listened to a few over the past several days, and they address many of the themes from this book. I wish you well on your path.

Great
By Jackson W.
Exceptionally well done- in addition to skillfully framing Buddhism in secular light, the author does a very nice job of breaking down the nuances of 'Dharma.' The author spends his pages portraying the ideas of Buddhism in a way that showcases their useful qualities, irrespective of religious metaphysics. More than most religions, Buddhism focuses its philosophy on how to live well and be happy during this life through understanding of the causes of suffering inherent in the human condition - rather than on being happy later as a result of your 'work' during this life. For this reason, Buddhism seems to lend itself especially well to treatment as a secular philosophy.

There's quite a lot of history in the book. There is good discussion of what stories are probably historical and what can probably be attributed to religious editing over the years. This does involve a certain degree of educated speculation, which could be a criticism of this book. I thought he did a thoughtful job in his discussion, and put forth some thought provoking ideas.

Definitely worth the read for anyone interested in learning more about Buddhist ideas, religiously inclined or otherwise.

I would guess that this book would be challenging for someone with no knowledge of Buddhism, although it doesn't specifically presuppose any knowledge.

I am so blown away by the author's explanation of many familiar passages from the Pali Canon. I have been studying and practicing Buddhism for nearly 40 years, first as a religion, then not as a religion but as a mental discipline, then again as a religion...... anyway, I think you can see my point -- confusion comes from having so many competing views of what the Buddha actually taught. I am not a Pali scholar and so have had to rely on the various translations and interpretations out there but I am trained in a profession that is grounded in logic (the law) and that is what I find so appealing in this book. It has already answered some of my long term questions, e.g. what is the unborn? how is this different from the Hindu atman? how does this fit with the reference to anatman in other Buddhist teachings? I highly recommend.

Run, don't walk, to buy, read and use The Art of Opportunity
By Amazon Customer
I've read way too many business books to remember and entered into this kicking and screaming, at the insistence of the leader of our latest planning session. Yikes, was I in for a surprise! The session was much more productive than any in the past few years, by overwhelming agreement, and we will be referring back to The Art again as we execute. Maybe it's the visuals, or the layout. The process just clicked.
If you think you've seen it all, think again. We're now considering bring in one or more of the authors to facilitate. Let's see where this new approach takes us.
