Review
"

"Talented but timid? This noted ad‐man is here to tell you that ambition, not just mere ability, is the key to success in his world ... Arden is punchy and memorable about ’failing better next time’." – i-D

"Saatchi & Saatchi creative legend‐turned‐director Paul Arden has committed his considerable wit and creative thinking to paper in a handy‐sized book on how to succeed. Not just in advertising but in business generally. Far from being one of those excruciating self‐help guides favored by buttoned‐down businessmen, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be is a startlingly refreshing, unputdownable collection of thought‐provoking pearls of wisdom." – Shots

"Chapters such as It’s Right to be Wrong, Have you Noticed How the Cleverest People at School Are Not Those Who Make It In Life? and Do Not Seek Praise, Seek Criticism are accompanied by an entertaining collection of photos and illustrations. Get it and you’ll never think the same way again." – Shots

"The former creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi teaches readers how to smash down life’s impossible barriers using a fresh combination of wit, smart thinking, and horiffic mistakes. Outrageously genius." – The Good Book Guide

". . .A wonderful book by one of the most brilliant men I have ever met. . . I met him when he worked as creative director at Saatchi and Saatchi and he was simply inspirational – as is this practical, unpretentious little book." – Amanda Platell

"...Deliciously rich paperback..." – Chicago Sun‐Times

"British adman Paul Arden’s semi‐parodic study in self‐help is as funny as it is provocative..." – Radar

"Who is this guy Arden anyway? Please forgive my enthusiasm this month for quoting Paul Arden extensively, but his wisdom has recently inspired me. Arden was the creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi from 1977–1992, and his tiny new book out in May, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want to Be (Phaidon , $7.95), packs a big punch. This magnificent little manifesto is for true creative types to read, savor and carry in their pocket. It should remind us all that nothing is impossible." – PAPER magazine

The Secret History of Wonder Woman, by Jill Lepore

A riveting work of historical detection revealing that the origins of one of the world's most iconic superheroes hides within it a fascinating family story - and a crucial history of 20th-century feminism.

Wonder Woman, created in 1941, is the most popular female superhero of all time. Aside from Superman and Batman, no superhero has lasted as long or commanded so vast and wildly passionate a following. Like every other superhero, Wonder Woman has a secret identity. Unlike every other superhero, she has also has a secret history.

Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer Jill Lepore has uncovered an astonishing trove of documents, including the never-before-seen private papers of William Moulton Marston, Wonder Woman's creator. Beginning in his undergraduate years at Harvard, Marston was influenced by early suffragists and feminists, starting with Emmeline Pankhurst, who was banned from speaking on campus in 1911, when Marston was a freshman. In the 1920s, Marston and his wife, Sadie Elizabeth Holloway, brought into their home Olive Byrne, the niece of Margaret Sanger, one of the most influential feminists of the 20th century. The Marston family story is a tale of drama, intrigue, and irony. In the 1930s, Marston and Byrne wrote a regular column for Family Circle celebrating conventional family life, even as they themselves pursued lives of extraordinary nonconformity. Marston, internationally known as an expert on truth - he invented the lie detector test - lived a life of secrets, only to spill them on the pages of Wonder Woman.

The Secret History of Wonder Woman is a tour de force of intellectual and cultural history. Wonder Woman, Lepore argues, is the missing link in the history of the struggle for women's rights - a chain of events that begins with the women's suffrage campaigns of the early 1900s and ends with the troubled place of feminism a century later.

Prepare to be surprised, amazed, and alarmed by the people who created and shaped this comic icon.
By Peter J. Ward
Here is the internal dialog I had going at one point while reading this book.

Me: "So the inventor of Wonder Woman was a psychology PhD who also invented the first lie detector."

Also me: "Neat."

Me: "Get this, he was also a pretty hardcore first-wave feminist and based a lot of Wonder Woman's stories and characteristics on Margaret Sanger, the birth-control pioneer."

Also me: "That's pretty cool."

Me: "He also lived with three women, had children with two of them, and balanced this unusual lifestyle fairly gracefully in way that his wife, Halloway, could fulfill her ambition to maintain a full-time job, while his mistress, Olive Bynre, could do what she wanted and raise the kids, while the third woman, Hurston, could come and go as she pleased. I should mention that Byrne wore thick silver bracelets, while Hurston and he were really into bondage."

Also me: "That's pretty crazy, I mean especially for the early twentieth century..."

Me: "You're still not getting it: kick-ass first-wave feminist sensibilities, thick silver bracelets, bondage, and making people tell the truth."

Also me: "Oh God, that's Wonder Woman's whole gig, truth-telling lasso and all. Wow."

So if after that little exchange you find yourself intrigued instead of bored, check this book out. It really is more of a biography of William Moulton Marston (WW's creator) than of the character, but it really is pretty interesting and naturally puts Wonder Woman's development into a more complete context. And the detailed research that went into digging this story out of DECADES of deliberate obfuscation is simply amazing. The author, Jill Lepore, deserves a round of applause for finding this amazing story and bringing it to the public in such an engaging way. This book integrates the history of feminism, comic books, psychology, social shifts in both sexuality and gender, and in the process gives us a nuanced look at some truly interesting people.

Martson was a competent but spotlight-loving academic who couldn't resist sabotaging his own successes (in that way he is similar to his predecessor, The wizard from Vienna: Franz Anton Mesmer). Halloway, the wife and rock of the relationship(s) who wanted to give life her best as a working woman but still be able to raise a family. Byrne, the (seduced) graduate student who worked on much of WMM's projects anonymously and raised the Marston family to compensate for her own lonely childhood. And there are many others.

Suffice to say - this is an engaging read for anyone interested in the history of feminism, comics, and (naturally) Wonder Woman herself.

FUN AND FANTASTIC WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT
By Jeanne Pieper
wonderful book. I had NO idea it would have so much good history in it.....I have purchased several more copies to give to friends and relatives (INCLUDING MEN!) as presents. You should promote it as an enjoyable, fun way to learn about the history of women's liberation.
I am one of the founders and current board member of The Action Committee for Women in Prison.....and am passing the word on to everyone I can think of.

Wonder Woman, Suffrage and the Family Behind the Comic.
By Daniel Hurley
Aside from learning about the complex origins of Wonder Woman, I learned a lot more about the history of woman's suffrage and I have even a deeper admiration for Margaret Sanger who was the inspiration for Wonder Woman. The mini bio on Sanger was quite impressive and after learning of the amazing number of births that her mother had that possible contributed to her early death, you can understand her motivation to free women from a life of continuous child birth and to have rights within their marriage and as an independent individual with options for career. The creator of Wonder Woman, William Marston, was a story in his self between inventing the lie detector test and an inability to maintain sustained employment in spite of many excellent academic assignments. In addition, his unique ability to embrace the woman's suffrage movement while living with two women, his wife Elizabeth and Olive Byrne, and raising 4 children with both is quite fascinating. Both women were able to sustain careers, particularly after Olive was able to ease up on her primary child rearing. The progression of the comic is frustrating as Lepore explains the challenges of censors, vindictive psychiatrists and after Marston's early death, the assignment of a writer who has virtual no admiration for the original persona of Wonder Woman. Lepore provides so much about the unusual lives of the Marston family, advanced in some ways, two women involved with child rearing allowing one to have a career while explaining the motivations and symbolism of the comic. A book that was both fascinating and educating on the woman's movement complete with an update on Wonder Woman's place in the feminist movement of the 60s and 70s.

In the Wake of the Plague: The Black Death and the World It Made, by Norman F. Cantor

The Black Death was the fourteenth century's equivalent of a nuclear war. It wiped out one-third of Europe's population, takingmillion lives. And yet, most of what we know about it is wrong. The details of the Plague etched in the minds of terrified schoolchildren -- the hideous black welts, the high fever, and the awful end by respiratory failure -- are more or less accurate. But what the Plague really was and how it made history remain shrouded in a haze of myths.

Now, Norman Cantor, the premier historian of the Middle Ages, draws together the most recent scientific discoveries and groundbreaking historical research to pierce the mist and tell the story of the Black Death as a gripping, intimate narrative.

Amazon.com Review
One-third of Western Europe's population died between 1348 and 1350, victims of the Black Death. Noted medievalist Norman Cantor tells the story of the pandemic and its widespread effects in In the Wake of the Plague.

After giving an overview, Cantor describes various theories about the medical crisis, from contemporary fears of a Jewish conspiracy to poison the water (and the resulting atrocities against European Jews) to a growing belief among modern historians that both bubonic plague and anthrax caused the spiraling death rates. Cantor also details ways in which the Black Death changed history, at both the personal level (family lines dying out) and the political (the Plantagenet kings may well have been able to hold onto France had their resources not been so diminished).

Cantor veers from topic to topic, from dynastic worries to the Dance of Death, and from peasants' rights to Perpendicular Gothic. This makes for amusing reading, though those seeking an orderly narrative may be frustrated. He also seems overly concerned with rumors of homosexual behavior, and his attempt to link the savage method of Edward II's murder to a cooling in global weather is a bit farfetched.

Cantor wears his considerable scholarship lightly, but includes a very useful critical biography for further reading. While not an entry-level text on the Black Death, In the Wake of the Plague will interest readers looking for a broader interpretation of its consequences. --Sunny Delaney

From Publishers Weekly
The author, currently an emeritus professor at New York University, has had a distinguished career as a medieval historian, and his textbook The Civilization of the Middle Ages has been popular with many students over many years. Here Cantor produces a popular account of one of the greatest disasters ever to befall the people of Europe. The great plague that struck in the mid-14th century, and returned intermittently for centuries thereafter, had a mortality rate of perhaps 40% and consequently ushered in several profound changes. Beginning with a biomedical survey of the disease, the author points out many problems with current beliefs about its origins, transmission and nature. He suggests that in many instances the likely cause of death was anthrax, which has the same initial symptoms as plague. The plague fell on all classes and regions, and the author uses the stories of several individuals to personalize the devastation and its consequences. He makes a particularly compelling case that the death of Thomas Bradwardine, newly consecrated archbishop of Canterbury, had deep repercussions for the development of both science and religion. In some instances the book raises points that deserve fuller treatment, such as the possible role of serpents in the transmission of plague, but the final chapter neatly summarizes the consequences of this calamity. This book will be welcomed by anyone who wants a good introduction to the topic.

From Library Journal
Cantor (emeritus, New York Univ.; The American Century, LJ 8/99) here looks at the effects of the Black Death on 14th-century Europe. The author believes that our future may be threatened by epidemics as devastating as the Black Death, whether brought on by natural causes or by bio-terrorism. Surveying recent biomedical research on the Black Death, he believes that two diseases were at work in the 14th century the Bubonic Plague, long identified as the major component of the Black Death, and a variety of anti-humanoid Anthrax. The result was devastating, with up to 40 percent of Europe's population dying from the diseases. Among the historical consequences, Cantor believes, was the end of the Plantagenets' Anglo-French Empire, for the Black Death decimated the peasant population that supplied the English kings with the skilled infantry archers that were the backbone of England's military might. This work should appeal to both specialists and general readers and is highly recommended for public and academic libraries. Robert J. Andrews, Duluth P.L., MN

Sloppy and Unsatisfying
By Richard R
This book reads like it was written on a deadline without any serious research. Don't be intimidated by the 230 pages. The large font and small pages disguise the fact that it is little more than a brochure. In the early pages the reader gets hints that it will be a wide-ranging review of causes and consequences of the great European plague of 1348. Suggestions that the labor shortage created when 40% of the population perished led to the destruction of ossified social institutions and paved the way for the Renaissance while fundamentally changing land ownership patterns and the Catholic church. Now that would have been an interesting book.
Unfortunately, it's not this book. The next chapter is little more than an ad-libbed 33-page anti-royalty sermon. The English Princess Joan dies of plague in Bordeaux on her way to Spain. The book's peculiar approach to this event is not to separate and examine the historical strands of consequence so much as to provide an outlet for a strange loathing for medieval nobility. "Joan was a top-drawer white girl, a European princess"; "Most kings filled their roles weakly and uneasily, like third-rate actors playing Hamlet on road circuit in the boondocks"; "Three flunkies of the royal household were dispatched to purvey (that is, extort) food from Devon". Two pages describing Joan's baggage and another four on chapels that English nobles built for themselves. No depth, just a silly down-with-the-crown sensibility while discussing nothing but a string of English kings, and even then without drawing any connections to the plague.
Next come long bios of two Oxford intellectuals, both interesting fellows, but there is no serious analysis of consequences, just that they were smart and they died of the same disease. Like the review of Aquinas' Aristotelian theology and the sad story of Edward Hastings, it's all sort of interesting, but it doesn't have much to do with the plague. The only strong chapter is the discussion of pogroms against Jews in plague-afflicted countries that ultimately led to large Jewish communities in Poland and Ukraine.
The cynical style and lazy disregard for facts can be grating. The book never misses a chance to call someone gay, to stick in pointless factoids about wine, oddly to call the Nile the "great mortality chute" while confusing the direction of its flow. In chapter two, we read that one theory, "a minority opinion", suggests that the 1348 plague was combined with an anthrax outbreak. By chapter eight, we are assured that there is "consensus" that anthrax was involved. Or the throwaway comment that the Ottomans took Constantinople in 1453 "on their way to Bosnia" - not only had the Ottomans defeated the Serbs in Kosovo in 1389, but Constantinople wasn't captured on the way to anything, it was the crown jewel of their conquests.
The shame of it is that readers won't come away knowing much more about the plague and its consequences than they did before. There is still a gap on the shelf for a good book on the topic. "In The Wake of the Plague" is unsatisfying - a sore disappointment

Avoid this like the Plague
By Dr. Christopher Coleman
Cantor strikes a populist direction with this book. He affects a breezy writing style (one can easily imagine much of his writing as a spoken, off-the-cuff lecture punctuated by more-or-less amusing asides, some of which totally derail his train of thought), the book is short (only 220 pages of text) and there is not a single footnote. The obvious comparison in terms of subject matter is to Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century. Tuchman made a best seller from her remarkable approach in spite of her scholarly writing-style. Cantor's book lacks that sophistication of approach, and is further marred, as other reviewers have already noted, by too much repetition, too many asides, too much unsupported speculation, too many inconsistencies, and too many factual errors. There is some merit to the book, but its flaws far outweigh its worth.
Cantor at his best cites an interesting theory: that the Black Death was not a single disease, but two or more--not bubonic plague alone, but also some cattle-borne disease such as a particularly virulent form of anthrax. Supporting this theory are the Black Death's infestation of Iceland, an isolated island not known to have rats until the 17th Century, the often extremely rapid course of the disease--faster than that of bubonic plague; the lack of typical bubonic plague symptoms in many victims; the evidence that cattle were ravished by the Black Death; and the continued virulence of the plague in winter months when flea hosts would not normally live. The theory is not Cantor's own, but he has researched and supported it in seemingly convincing fashion, but he ignores the actual nature of the disease in its "pneumatic" form. Less adequate is Cantor's chapter "Heritage of the African Rifts", which discusses the three pandemics of smallpox, gonorrhea, and plague and places their origin in "the great mortality chute from East Africa. Certainly that is where the bubonic plague came from after A.D. 500." But in his bibliography Cantor cites William H. McNeill's Plagues and Peoples and says, contradicting his own earlier statement written with such certainty, "McNeill thought the Mongols, their migrations and conquests, were a key to plague history; there may be something in that."
Also of interest, but clearly quirky, was Cantor's chapter on various speculations on the true cause of the Black Death. "Serpents and Cosmic Dust" covers alternative explanations for the "biomedical catastrophe" from the medieval to the present, focusing on two suggestions: the first, that snakes were the carriers; the second, that plague came from outer space. Cantor is kind, although not entirely enthusiastic, about these speculations: at one point he says "It is just possible that medieval writers who placed the origins of the Black Death in serpents dispensing plague as they swam up rivers were on to something." Unfortunately, the only "evidence" he offers is that another historian on an unrelated issue once took medieval writers at their word in the face of academic thought and has since been vindicated. The argument in favor of the cosmic dust theory is basically that it was proposed by eminent astrophysicist Fred Hoyle--what is not mentioned is Hoyle's second career as a well-known science fiction writer. Hoyle's is a fascinating speculation, which only the most flimsy of circumstantial evidence can currently support.
Cantor mentions one fascinating fact in this chapter that needed to be explored much further: plague was not widespread in Poland and Bohemia. This has been explained "by the rats' avoidance of these areas due to the unavailability of food the rodents found palatable." This seems unlikely --elsewhere Cantor points out the relative agricultural wealth of Poland and the Ukraine. Could Polish grain really be considerably different than Western European grain--and what of the anthrax theory, which would have the disease unaffected by the rodent's diet?
Socio-cultural differences between Poland and Bohemia and the rest of Europe would make an ideal testing ground for those theories concerning the effect the Black Death had on society, the arts, and religion. But rather than do any original research comparing plague-ridden and plague-free areas, Cantor merely launches into various criticisms of his colleagues' work in his final chapter, "Aftermath". Cantor examines these theories and subjects them to a much less forgiving critique than the far wilder speculations mentioned previously. Some of these attacks are odd indeed, such as critiquing a book published in 1919! This is the most poorly written and argued part of the entire book, and honestly I cannot tell to what conclusion Cantor comes-whether the Black Death did or did not have any profound effect beyond killing off certain talented individuals.
Finally, the outright errors. Rather than repeat those caught by other reviewers, I'll discuss the extraordinary apparent claim of time-travel. Cantor recounts the story of the le Strange/Talbot family. Richard Talbot inherited the la Strange estate from the dowager Mary upon her "dying in 1396." (Whether this was a plague-related death Cantor apparently deems unimportant.) Later in the chapter we are told "Richard Talbot, newly enriched by the le Strange fortune, got his father out of debtor's prison and the old soldier died of the plague in 1387 in Spain..." How could Richard have paid his father's debts with money he wouldn't receive for nine more years? I cannot account for the chronology of events without either contemplating a typographical error, a rift in the space-time continuum, or a mis-informed or deeply confused author. Hopefully it is the former, and Mary died ten years earlier than Cantor reports; but I am left with the discomforting concern that the dates are correct and Cantor simply speculated on Talbot's source of funds. Unfortunately this is not an isolated error.
While Cantor's book is more up-to-date than Barbara Tuchman's is, I can't recommend it, even as a supplement. It is too deeply flawed on too many levels. I'm left to wonder if some horrible computer virus didn't work its way through the manuscript, decimating the writing and killing at least 40% of the ultimate value of the book. As Cantor says, "It is just possible."

No depth, just a silly down-with-the-crown sensibility while discussing nothing but a string of English kings, and even then without drawing any connections to the plague. The cynical approach toward the topic, and to the readers, begs the question of why Cantor writes about something he despises (kings), rather than about the subject he chose (plague). The answer, presumably, is that he already knows about kings.
Next come long bios of two Oxford intellectuals, both interesting fellows, but there is no serious analysis of consequences, just that they were smart and they died of the same disease. The Scottish Henry James
By I Got Popcorn
"Henry James chewed more than he bit off."

That's the review of my husband for the English writer's books -- and mine for MacKenzie's.

I bought this collection for my husband, who has wanted it for years, ever since seeing the Ealing stuidos movie "Whisky Galore" when he was a kid. We recently bought an Ealing collection and also watched all of the BBC series "Monarch of the Glen." MacKenzie can be hard reading; there is constant repetition of the same scenes, through letters, conversations and points of view. It's like Roshomon in kilts. Note: this version includes Gaelic translations and pronunciation guides; you'll discover what the old Irish music-hall character really meant when she moaned, "Oh worra worra." Warning: it's spelled nothing like.

"Monarch of the Glen": The TV series is a modernized version of the three novels, and manages to mention almost everyone in it, in new or tweaked roles. It's film-geek fun to read all three novels and then watch for the disguised characters and situations to show up in the show. Duncan, for example, is a composite of the old Laird's gillie's name, a character only mentioned once as "a kilted gillie," and -- in the third novel -- a Scottish radio host.

"Whisky Galore": Whatever did Paul Waggert do to MacKenzie? He takes a sledge to the man every chance he gets. The movie version is funnier, but only because the one thing MacKenzie really needed was an editor.

"The Rival Monsters:" As a journalist for small rural and county papers, I found myself giggling ruefully over MacKenzie's back-and-forth betweeen editors, writers, and the kind of people who write letters to the editor. He's nailed what happens in a small community when the rumor and sensation mill starts. The snit the islanders get into over the filming of "Whisky Galore" is a weirdly satisfying break in the fourth wall.

Review
Dave Ross has created an invaluable tool for both students and professionals. While photos and models are useful, artists shouldn’t be limited by the reference available to them. Dave gives the artist the means to build a figure from the imagination based on gesture, construction, and anatomy.

--June Brigman, comics artist, co-creator of Power Pack from Marvel Comics, and professor of sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design

Introduction

The term freehand drawing describes the practice of drawing from the imagination without the aid of a live model or photographic reference.

Freeing the artist from any dependency on such sources allows for maximum versatility—the artist is restricted only by his or her imagination or skill level. As it applies specifically to the human figure, it is the drawing of the body in any pose imaginable and from any angle—without the need for a reference.

Freehand Figure Drawing for Illustrators offers up a constructive approach to drawing the human form that can be traced back to the early 1900s. Illustrators of that era developed a system for blocking out the human figure using a drawn mannequin.

This book focuses on that drawn mannequin, putting it through its paces in ways that those early illustrators could not have foreseen. There are studies of standing, walking, and running figures, of course, but also leaping, dodging, and flying ones. Mannequins throwing punches and high kicking demonstrate the mechanics of motion and will help you to examine the limitations of the body’s movement. The drawn mannequin is nothing more or less than a visualization tool—a simplified representation of the human body that enables the artist to block figures into place with proper proportions and posing.

It is particularly useful when dealing with more complex camera angles (for example, the bird’s-eye and worm’s-eye views). With a drawn mannequin, the artist doesn’t have to deal with the details of specific anatomy, folds in clothing, or lighting and can focus on achieving a solid, well-constructed underdrawing (or mannequin), first.

The mannequin is transparent (which is why it’s also known as a glass mannequin) to help the artists using it think of what they are drawing as three-dimensional or in the round. This is a crucial mind-set for artists to attain. They must think of everything they draw as having volume—of occupying space—if they wish that sense to be conveyed to their audience. On an even more practical note: the mannequin’s transparency allows the artist to locate the sometimes obscured connection of that far arm or leg to the trunk of the body.

Mannequins used in this book range from basic to intermediate to advanced. Each successive category introduces more human anatomy into the mannequin figures, enabling you to progress in stages. I have varied the mannequins throughout the book on a need-to-see basis. Earlier chapters contain a higher percentage of basic mannequins, while later ones such as those in chapter 10 are weighted toward the advanced model.

The first chapter of this book offers a primer in technical perspective. This is a necessary first step for those considering freehand drawing of any sort. The ability to visualize in three dimensions on the flat page or screen is indispensable to the process. The fundamentals outlined in chapter 1 will help instill in you a heightened sense of depth, which you can then apply directly to drawing the human figure.

Your ability to draw convincing poses—both in form and in gesture—will increase in direct proportion to your understanding of anatomy. The study of human anatomy is included in this book, both as sub sections in the chapters covering the head, hands,
and feet, as well as in whole chapters devoted to the human skeleton (chapter 8) and
the muscles (chapter 9). The skeleton is the foundation that shapes the body; however,
it is the muscles that make the body “move.” Ingrained anatomical knowledge is espe-cially important for the freehand artist, since there is no actual model or other reference immediately at hand to guide you. If you can include muscle tone and bone-related landmarks in your freehand sketching, it will greatly add to your speed and versatility.

Freehand Figure Drawing for Illustrators is for anyone who has ever dreamed of picking up a pencil and drawing spontaneously from the imagination. That being said, it certainly does represent a valuable skillset for the professional artist whether working in the field of animation, cinematic storyboarding, concept art, or book and comic book illustration.

Beyond all other considerations, however, there is the simple satisfaction that can come from adopting the freehand approach. This is what drawing should be about, straight from the mind to the page with no stops or detours along the way!

Tired of always having to have a reference? Only able to draw the figure front the front eye level view? This book is for you!
By M. Farrow
Great book! If you have already purchased/referenced most figure drawing books and you are looking for something a bit different and more in depth than this is for you. I pretty much already have a good understanding of human anatomy (having gone to art school for both high school and college) but I wanted a book that was going to help me improve as an artist as far as drawing from the mind and memory. Sure I can look at a picture or a live model and draw exactly what I see but me sitting in a room with just a paper and pencil and no internet/model/picture etc. and sometimes at certain angles/perspectives I get lost and don't know if I am getting it. I always feel like I have to reference something which isn't a bad thing to do but what if you can't always find the exact pose you are looking for in a picture and have no one available willing to stand still and model for you? I so admire artists that can simply sit down and for example say to themselves I am going to draw a man floating in the air and what a person would see looking up at them (worm's eye view) and they just drawing straight from their head. This book gives you the basic tools and understanding to be able to learn the rules to do that. The author/artist of the book breaks everything down by first explaining perspective and then how that relates to the figure and then how you can use a basic box (drawn in perspective) to learn how to draw the figure inside of it. Even though the book and the illustrations inside may lead you to believe that the book is just for graphic designers, comic artists drawing superheros etc. I still think this book is helpful for anyone that wants to learn how to fully and confidently learn to draw the human figure at any possible angle or view point. The price is extremely fair for a book of this length and quality. This is a book that should be in every artists collection if you are tired of only being able to draw the figure from the front eye level view. Don't get me wrong drawing the figures from memory isn't going to be easy and will take a ton of practice but this book is a tool to help you get there. Get a classic figure drawing book and this along with it and you are set!

Would Recommend for Artists with Problems Understanding Perspective
By Haley
I specifically liked this book because it started off by explaining the basics and built from there. I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners, because I could see it being a little frustrating if you're just starting out. I appreciate that it actually talks in depth about perspective, because it can be very difficult to find books or websites that do more than briefly mention it.
