Just Didn't Work for Me

If I didn't know better I would swear two different authors wrote this book. The sections set in current times were boring and I really didn't like any of the characters. I love Russian history so decided to skip to the fairytale parts of the book and low and behold here was a really good story! The writing styles were so different...why couldn't the entire book be written this way? I just skimmed through the parts in current times. And I'm sorry, the idea that because the mother suffered so much in Russia gave her the excuse to emotionally abuse her daughters and the supposedly loving father allowed it to go on just didn't work for me. If you want to read an incredible love story set during World War II and the siege of Leningrad...read The Bronze Horseman Trilogy by Paulina Simons. These books will simply sweep you off your feet and break your heart...incredible story written by a Russian who lived in Soviet Russia and whose grandparents lived through the siege. On my list of all time favorites!

It could have been better

I stayed with this book, even though it was frustrating, hoping it would get better. It did, but it would have been much better if it only would have contained the story in Russia. The first half was slow and the main characters very unlikable. The character flaws were overblown and the men too good to be true.
The Russian story is much more believe able and told in a way that made the reader feel the cold and hunger. I thought the end would be rewarding because of the style change but after Anya finishes her story the author goes back to the same trite style. Everything wraps up neatly, characters are brought together, and after 40 years of coldness and dysfunction everyone loves each other. It starts as a fairy tale and ends a fairy tale.

I think Kristin Hannah is a great author and storyteller

I think Kristin Hannah is a great author and storyteller. I have enjoyed many of her books. This one is no exception, it is a great story, but it is a sad story. The only negative I can find is that at times the character development can drag on. I think that I am kind of impatient when it comes to that style of writing so I find myself skimming a bit. Others I know love in depth character development, but for me personally, I love a good balance between character and story. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in history, especially WW2 history. I would recommend any of Kristin Hannah's books if you enjoy stories about families who are less than perfect.
