Lee Friedlander (b. 1934) first visited the birthplace of jazz in 1957, and immediately set about photographing the aging pioneers of the art form. His love of the music and the people of New Orleans drew him back to the city, and the relationships he formed over time gave him intimate access to a scene that forged one of America’s most original artistic traditions. A revised and expanded edition of his 1992 monograph The Jazz People of New Orleans, Playing for the Benefit of the Band features over 200 photographs taken by Friedlander between 1957 and 1982, many of which are published here for the first time. Storied figures such as Duke Ellington and Mahalia Jackson have been captured by Friedlander’s disarming lens, and Sweet Emma Barrett, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Johnny St. Cyr, and other luminaries are seen in their homes and the back rooms in which they gathered to play. Also included are photographs of the city’s second-line parades, whose jubilant dancing has long been a defining aspect of New Orleans jazz culture.

More is more--at least with Friedlander

For Friedlander fans, this book is essentially a remake of “The Jazz People of New Orleans”—but this time around it’s better. I hate to confess this, but “Jazz People” was definitely one of my least favorite Friedlander books—I can’t really say why, except that the people all seemed too far away, and even though the book was about musicians playing on the streets and in clubs, somehow the book went silent. It all felt like a funeral for a generation.
The new book has some of the same pictures, from the same vintage, but this time they are printed a bit bigger—which really helps on the portraits—even the posed shots inside people’s homes manage to come alive—and the street shots are full of exuberance—you can hear the music and the laughter—these people are having fun. Some of my favorites (after spending a hour with the book) are of a Mother’s day parade in 1973—proving you don’t have to be dead or young and thin to have a good time—any excuse will do…
I once heard a very knowledgeable photographic gallery owner complain about Friedlander—“too many damn pictures”—and this new collection has twice as many pictures as the earlier version—but with Friedlander, it always seems like more is more—more pictures always seem to add a few more stories, a few more jokes.
And, as with most of the books coming out of Yale in the past few years, the book production is splendid—the printing spot on, the paper rich and creamy—a great book.
